2. ARTALISSA2 SHETTER (MARTIN1) was born October 22, 1822 in Anderson Co., Tenn., and died March 30, 1894 in Titus Co, Texas. She married JAMES T. SMITH February 09, 1841 in Shelby Co., Tenn.. He was born September 16, 1818 in Todd Co., Kentucky, and died December 06, 1884 in Camp Co, Texas.

Artalissa Shetter was born in Anderson Co., TN. in 1822. There was a Martin Shetter listed on an early TN. tax list which included Anderson Co. Artalissa and James Smith married in 1841 in Shelby Co., TN. where Martin Shutter was on the 1840 Shelby Co., TN. census with a daughter 15-18 years old. He was the only Shetter / Shutter in Shelby Co., in 1840. On the 1850 Harrison Co., TX, 1860, & 1880 Titus Co., TX. census Artalissa lists her father as being born in PA. It is believed that Martin Shetter was born in PA. and was the son of George Shetter from York Co., PA.

The record of the dispersal of Artalissa's estate was filed in Titus Co., TX. in Jan. 1896, naming Joseph P. Smith as administrator. Final dispersal filed May 2, 1899.

AMES T. SMITH:
It is not known when James T. Smith went to Shelby Co., Tennessee, but he married Artalissa Shetter there in 1841. Marriage bond witnessed by Joseph Brooks. He and Artalissa first came to Harrison Co., Texas probably just prior to 1850. They were on the 1850 Harrison Co.,TX. census with two of their children. Also living with them was J.C. Shetter, 20, male, born in Ala, and a C. Shetter, 17, female, born in Ala. They were next found on the 1860, and 1880 Titus Co., TX. census, in the Cason, Snow Hill dist. where they made their home.

James T. Smith served in the Civil War. He was in the 27th Cavalry Co., I, Whitfield's Legion. He, along with his son William Giles Smith and son in law, John W. Taunton all joined in Daingerfield, TX.

James T. Smith's name appears in the dispersal of Mary Jane Shetter's estate in 1848, Shelby Co., TN

Laura M. Randle and James Clay Randle; all of whom reside in Titus County, Texas.

4. MARTIN2 SHETTER (MARTIN1) was born Abt. 1825 in Alabama, and died Aft. 1870 in Arkansas. He married CATHERINE TWYFORD December 21, 1849 in Shelby Co., Tenn., daughter of WILLIAM TWYFORD and JANE COX. She was born Abt. 1828 in TN, and died Aft. 1870 in Arkansas.

ARTIN SHETTER:
There is a Martin Shetter listed in the "Roster of Confederate Soldiers" edited by Janet B. Hewitt, published by Broadfoot Publishing Company, Wilmington, NC., 1996, Volume XIV, page 64. Martin is listed as a member of AR Cavalry., Poe's Bn., Dismukes Company., 1st Sergeant.

Marriage record found in Shelby Co., TN., witnessed by Eli Hill. He and his wife were listed on the 1850 Shelby Co., TN. census, He was 25, wife Catherine 23.

Martin Shetter's name was found in the Book "Early History of Des Arc and it's People" on page 15, 44, & 74

The book was a collection of articles of interest about the town which was compiled
by Ted R. Worley and reprinted in the WHITE RIVER JOURNAL between March
22, 1956 and March 28, 1957.

Page 15 (Part X) states: "The census of White River Township of 1860
lists the following heads of families and their age: ...Born in
Alabama: M. Shetter, 39..."

Page 74 (Part XLIX): The writer described Des Arc after the war and how
rough times were but that people were spirited and began the slow
process of rebuilding the town. "In April (1866), M. Shetter announced
the re-opening of his blacksmith shop at his old location."

Page 44 (Part XXVII): "Martin Sheter was both blacksmith and
wagon-maker. The two skills were usually found together, nearly all
wagon-makers being also blacksmiths, because iron work for wagons was a
product of the blacksmith's skill. Wagon-makers also made bows for
holding the "wagon sheet" over the wagon. Bows were usually made of
young whitoak or hickory."

M. Shetter, age 37, blacksmith, and wife Catherine, age 30 were on the 1860 Prairie Co., AR. census with the following children:
Tennessee age 10, born in TN... Jane age 9, born in TN... Martha age 4, born in TN... William age 2, born in AR... Elizabeth, age 13, laborer, born in TN... Alexander age 12, born in TN... Mary E. age 11, born in TN... William B. age 5, born in AR. It is unclear who some of these children belonged to.

M. Shetter, saw miller, age 46 born in Ala. and wife Catherine age 42 born in TN, were found on the 1870 Pulaski Co., AR. census with children Tennessee 19 f. born in TN. Martha 14 f. born in TN. John C. 4 born in AR. and Henry G. 1 born in AR. Also living with them was a Wm. Phillips 12, born in AR.

Martin Shetter bought several items at the dispersal of his mother, Mary Jane Shetter's estate in Shelby Co., TN.

Henry G. Shetter was found on the 1900 Jackson Co., Arkansas census living with Mary E. Harrison, a widow age 48 born in Arkansas, both parents born in TN. He was listed as a boarder. Also listed in the same home was Canady Lewis, age 21 born in MO., both his parents born in Arkansas.

He married the widowed Mary Harrison..No children were born to this union.

Henry Shetters, age 79 died on his birthday here Mon. morning at 9:30 o'clock at the home of a nephew J. E. Bowen, where he had been ill for several weeks. Mr. Shetter was well known throughout the county.
Besides Mr. Bowen he is survived by one other nephew Jim Owens of Lansing, Mich. and three nieces, Mrs. Lula McDowell of Louisana, Mrs Mary Greer of Rosebud, and Mrs Ada Hendrix of Little Rock
Funeral services were held at the Hickory Grove Cemetery Monday at 4 P.M. conducted by the Rev. Alfred Knox, Pastor of the Tuckerman Methodist Church
Pallbearers were: Coy Parsley, Archie Townsley, H. J. Penix, Alfred Johnson, and H. A. Lawrence.
The Frank Leach Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements
