Obituary: 1952
James Edward Bowen, 73, died at Newport hospital Saturday afternoon following a lengthy illness.
He was born in White County January 2, 1879, the son of Press Bowen and "Tennie" Shetter Bowen. At an early age he became a member of the Methodist Church and was very active in the affairs of the church as long as his health permitted, having served as a member of it's Board of Stewards a number of years.
On April 27, 1902 he was united in Marriage with Miss Maggie Coe. Two daughters were born to this union. Mattie, who became Mrs Paul Yelverton and Norene, who became Mrs Ed Darling. Two nephews were also reared in the Bowen home, Emmett and Carroll Thompson. Emmett died at the age of six and Carroll grew to manhood. Mr. and Mrs Bowen lived on a farm near Hickory Grove until 1911 when they moved into their present home in Tuckerman.
On April 27 of this year they celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary with approximately 150 guests calling.
For many years Mr. Bowen was in the Meat Market and Grocery business. Because of health conditions he retired from this and devoted his time primarily to farming
During his lifetime he served as Mayor of Tuckerman and took an active interest in the affairs of his community, both as a citizen and officeholder. He was known for his readiness to help his fellow men at all times
Survivors, other than his wife and two daughters, include one granddaughter, Mrs. J. P. Wade, one great granddaughter, Susan Yelverton Wade, Tuckerman, three grandsons, James Nelson, Ted Coe and Edward Bowen Darling of McCrory.
