George Melvin Smith & Mary Wedman, My GG-Grandparents George was born January 13, 1840 in Milltown, ME or Nova Scotia, and died January 15, 1885 in Milltown,Washington, Maine. He married MARY WEDMAN August 08, 1861 in First Baptist Church, Calais, Washington, Maine, daughter of CHARLES WEDMAN and JANE LAMBERT. Mary was born February 22, 1842 in Oak Bay or Bayside, New Brunswick, and died February 05, 1929 in Brockton, Plymouth, Massachusetts. George Melvin Smith was about 8 years old when his father Isaiah died, at that point he went to work to help support the family. George built his house (between 1861-1864) on School Street in Milltown,ME in which Julia and Charles were Born. This building burned in the late 1870's and George started another on the same site; about 1879 the family moved into their new but unfurnished home. This home remained until the late 1920's until it burned again. George was a devout Christain and when the family gathered for devotions on Christmas day he read to them the parable of the man who "built his house upon the rock" (Matt 7:24-29). Mortally injured in a mill explosion in Milltown, Washington, Maine the day after Christmas 1884, George died two weeks later on Jan 15, 1885.
