The Wakehams of Devon and Liverpool
The Wakehams of Devon and Liverpool
Updated December 16, 2001DianeWakeham Palo Alto,California | I am researching the roots of the Wakeham family in and around Liverpool, England.Richard Wakeham Jr. was born about 1817 in Dartmouth, Devon to Richard Wakeham and his wife Elizabeth. In the 1840s and 1850s a large number of Wakehams all moved from Devon to Liverpool.Richard Jr, a master mariner, married Ellen Langshaw in 1842 and they settled in Toxteth Park, Liverpool.Their son Robert Langshaw Wakeham, a wine merchant's manager, was born in about 1852 and married Angelina Sarah Thomas (b 1871, daughter of builder Richard Andrew Thomas and Angelina Hughes nee Baines) in 1893 in West Derby. Our family legend suggests that the name was formerly spelled Wykeham and traces back many generations in England. Specifically I am looking for information on Richard Jr or Richard Sr and their families, and why so many Wakehams relocated to Liverpool in the mid-1800s. I am also researching the Dethloff family, which came from Rostock, Germany to Liverpool, England.Frederick Dethloff was a sailor born in about 1840.With his wife Mary and three children Paul, Frederick, and Mary they emigrated to England between 1874-1880; where they had a fourth child Emil.Any information on their family origins in Germany would be extremely useful. Other individuals/ families in my tree include Edward Godfrey (b. 1820s? gardener near New Brighton), William Harding (b. 1854 in Hereford), Roland Harry Carter (b. 1858 Handworth, Stafford), and Margaret Bird (b. 1893 near Wallasey). |
