Notes for JOHN ALLEN WAKEFIELD: According to a GENEALOGY OF CORLEYS, He lived happily with his second wife until he enlisted in the army of the Civil War. He was a farmer, a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church from boyhood. He went with Sherman on his famous march to the sea, took part in the capture of Savannah, Georgia, after which he was taken sick and sent to a hospital, and died. His enlistment was October 15, 1864. He died March 3, 1865. He would have been 35 years old when he enlisted. We think it was unusual for a man that old with wife and children to enlist into the civil war. Also his brother, my great great grandfather William Harrison Wakefield was two years younger and was not in the Civil War. Notes for ANGELINE HALL: The 1850 census lists John as 21 years old and a Sariah as 17. It may be a middle name for Angeline as this was common but it does make one wonder if this listing is correct. They were farming 500 acres. |

Notes for WILLIAM HARRISON WAKEFIELD: William (Harry as he was called) is mentioned in his father Andrew Wakefield's will as receiving 140 acres of land including 20 acres of timber on Williamsburg hill plus a team of cattle known by the name of Ball and Peter, and John and Brandy which he had to divide with his brother John Allen Wakefield. He also received one log chain and with his brother John Allen a prairie plow. In the 1860 census William is listed as having 2000 acres of which 700 is farmed. We are not sure just how the census lists this land. Son William A. is seven years old, James A. is five and Jerome is two. It was apparent that Andrew wished his sons to stay and farm the land he left them but within 17 years William had moved his family to Kansas. Perhaps it was because the family lost two girls who both were born and died about a year later. In addition his brother Jonathan Cheatum Wakefield also lost two girls, one at the age of about three years old and another at 3 months.. In fact Sarah Lavisa, Jonathan's daughter died the day before Harry's daughter Eunice died. All four are buried in the same plot in Mount Olive cemetary. Perhaps he read a letter we saw in the Greenwood County Historical Society extolling the climate and fertility of that area. Also he maybe he could sell his land at a profit and buy cheaper land in Kansas. We know that a 20 acre tract of land of his was sold in Shelby county for taxes. moved his family from Illinois to Eureka, Greenwood county Kansas in 1869 and then came by wagon train to Elma, Washington in 1879. He was a pioneer of Greenwood County, Kansas where he was a farmer and stockman. He bought a claim west of Elma and his original farm of 160 acres is now in the city limits. He later entered the real estate business and he and David Byles platted a part of the Wakefield farm and put it on the market as the Wakefield and Byles addition to the town. In 1889 he organized the Bank of Elma. At the time the Northern Pacific Railroad had came and the outlook for the rapid growth of the town was good. These prospects dimmed with the panic of 1893. In the county voting list dated Oct. 21, 1890 William is listed as 60 years old and his occupation as a "Capitalist". Mr. Wakefield and his wife lived the last of their lives quietly on their home on West Main Street. In the 1870 Greenwood county Kansas census the following Wakefields are listed. Surname Given Name Age Township Wakefield Charles A. 26 Eureka (Brother to William Harrison) Wakefield Depolman (Depalmer) 6 Eureka Wakefield Eliza 32 Eureka Wakefield James 15 Eureka Wakefield Jerome 12 Eureka Wakefield Marry 1 1/2 Eureka Wakefield Otis O. 3 Eureka Wakefield William 39 Eureka Wakefield William A. 17 Eureka Shortly after this William moved his family to the Elma, Washington area. Notes for ELIZA ELIZABETH A.J. MEARS: Eliza was the daugher of William Mears, known as Uncle Billy, in cold spring Township, in Shelby County, Illinois. |
