Descendants of James Glancy

Generation No. 1

      1. James1 Glancy was born September 09, 1765 in Pennsylvania, and died October 28, 1828 in Harrison Township, Knox County, Ohio. He married Elizabeth Lighthill 1787 in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, daughter of Johannes George Lichtenberger. She was born July 1767 in Crows Run, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, and died July 05, 1855 in Knox County, Ohio.

Notes for James Glancy:
James was definitely in Allegheny County, western Pa., by July 1795 when his son David was born,
one mile south of Pittsburgh (Bible kept by David). Resident of Pine Township, Allegheny County,
as of June 6, 1808 when he sold to John Hillman one yoke of oxen, two cows, and one sorrel horse
for $47.12,. (Allegheny Co., Deeds 15:189). He may have been readying to move, as he was listed
in the 1810 Census as living in Ross Township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.

The 1810 Census showed James' household as 45 years or older; two boys 16-25; three boys 10-16;
three boys under 10; one woman 26-45; two girls 16-25; one girl 10-16; and three girls under 10 for
a total of seventeen people.

the 1820 Census shows James at New Sewickley, Pa including James 45 or older; one boy 10-16; one boy under 10; one woman 26-45; and 2 girls 10-16. According to the census there was also one
foreigner, not naturalized.

James moved to Knox County in Central Ohio in the 1828. He purchased a 100 acre tract in Knox
County in April 1828 near what is now called Mr. Vernon . In December 1828, the Knox County probate court settled James' estate and
dealt the 100 acre tract in 8 equal shares, suggesting that when James died he had 8 living children.
His son David came into possession of the whole 100 acres; the probate file contains quit claims from his brothers John, Thomas, and Owen.

According to a biographic sketch of James' grandson, William T. Glancy, published in 1887 James'
wife did not die until after the family settled in Knox County. Judging from the settlement of James'
estate, she predeceased him (excerpts from (Geographical & Historical Records of Adams & Well
Counties, Indiana", appearing in "Ohio Record & Pioneer Families", 23/4:157. The same 1887
sketch includes the statement that James himself cam to Pennsylvania from Ireland. It seems more
likely that he was born in PA because there were a number of Glancy's living there at the time of his
birth. The possibility that James himself was the family ocean-crosser cannot be excluded especially in light of the fact that his household in 1820 included a foreigner, not naturalized.
