      2. David Qualls2 ** (David1 Qualls) was born 1791 in Scott County, Virginia, and died 1865 in Lewis OR Carter County, Kentucky. He married Barbary Smith May 16, 1820 in Scott County, Virginia, daughter of Samuel Smith. She was born 1802 in Tennessee, and died in Lewis OR Carter County, Kentucky.

Notes for David Qualls **:
David Qualls is listed in the 1840 Census in Scott County, Virginia. He had
the following children: 2 males under 5 yrs old, 2 males between 5 and under
10, 2 males between 10 and under 15; 1 male 15 and under 20; no female children and himself age 40 but under 50 and his wife between age 30 and under 40.

David Qualls is listed in the 1850 Census in Scott County, Virginia living in the
Westr District. He has his 7 youngest children living with him; from Samuel P.
Qualls to Elizabeth Qualls; ages 21 to 7. Everyone was born in Virginia.
David and Barbara Qualls could not read and write.

David and Elizabeth Smith Qualls moved to Lewis County, Kentucky in 1858.


David Qualls appears in the Kentucky 1860 census in Lewis County, Kentucky
along with his wife Barbara Smith Qualls and his two younger children,
Mitchell and Elizabeth Qualls. They were all born in Virginia (Scott County).
David real estate value in 1860 was 250 and personal property value was 150.
David is listed as being age 69, Barbara age 64, Mitchell age 24 and Elizabeth
age 17. These may be inconsistent with the age we have recorded.

There was a George Qualls that purchased property in 1853 in Carter County,
Kentucky from Moylands Hrs, By Deselding Deed Book 6, #259. I am not sure of the relationship George had to David. Probably his oldest son that was listed
between age 15 and 20 in the 1840 Census. George was listed in the 1850 Greenup County Census of Ky along with his wife Cynthia A. Quall, Both age 29 (born 1821).

David Qualls is first listed in Lewis County, Kentucky in 1854 in the real estate
deed conveyances. David purchased 152 acres in Kinney, Lewis County, Ky
from a John Moylan. Deed Book N, #42.

David Qualls is listed in the property tax lists of Lewis County, Ky for the first
time in 1855. Value of 152 acres of land was $150 near the Kinniicknick water source. He owned 1 horse/mare that valued $50, 2 cattle, 3 children between 6 and 18 yrs old and 1 hog. Total Value was $200.

David Qualls transferred 152 acres in Grassy, Lewis County, Ky to William
Qualls, his son, in 1855; Deed Book N, #282.

David Qualls is listed in the property tax lists of Lewis County, Ky in 1856, the
value of land is zero, 4 cattle, 2 children bet. 6 and 18 yrs old. His son William
is also listed as having 152 acres of land with a $250 value for land, horse/mare with value of $40 and no children between age 6 and 18, total value of $290.

In 1857, David, William and Johnson Qualls are listed in the property tax census
of Lewis County but no values of land are listed.

In 1858, David and William only are listed in the property tax census of Lewis
County. David owned one horse/mare with $35 value, 6 cattle, 2 children
bet. 6 and 18 yrs old, and 6 hogs. William had 150 acres at Kinney valued at
$300.

In 1859, David and William only are listed in the property tax census of Lewis
County, Ky. David had 150 acres at Grassy, Ky value of $500, 2 horses valued
at $65, 1 child between 6 and 18, 3 hogs at $90, 200 bushels of corn, 12 bushels
of wheat; total value $655. William had no real estate, 3 hogs, no value.

William Qualls transferred 113 acres at Grassy, to David Qualls in 1860,
Deed Book P, #312.

In 1861, David, Johnson, Mitchell, and William are listed in the Property tax
census of Lewis County, Ky. David had 100 acres at Grassy valued at $300,
one horse at $40, 3 cattle, 8 hogs, 150 bushels of corn and 12 bushels of wheat
total value of $340. Johnson Qualls owned 1 cattle and was entrolled in the
militia. Mitchell was enrolled in the militia. William had 43 acres at Grassy
valued at $100, 2 cattle, 5 hogs, 10 pounds of tobacco, 100 bushels of corn,
and $4 value of gold.

In 1862, David, Johnson, William and Mitchell are listed in the property tax
census of Lewis County, Ky. David had 100 acres at Grassy valued at $300,
one horse at $40, 3 cattle, 8 hogs, 150 bushels of corn, 12 bushels of wheat.
William owned 45 acres for value of $100. Mitchell and Johnson owned no land.

In 1863, David, Johnson and William are listed in the property tax census.
David had 100 acres at Grassey valued at $300, 1 horse at $20 and 2 cattle at
$15; total value 335. William had land valued at $75, 1 horse at $25, 1 hog
and enrolled in militia. Johnson had no land and taxed at $90, and enrolled in
militia.

In 1864, only Johnson and William Qualls are listed in the property tax census.
Johnson was enrolled in militia. No value shown.

In 1865, David is shown as having 125 acres in Kinney value of $400. Mitchell
M. Qualls is enrolled in militia.

David Qualls transferred property at Grassy Fork of Kinney to Mitchell Qualls in
1866; Deed Book R, #441.

In 1866, David is shown as having no land and 1 free negro. Mitchell Qualls has
125 acres of land valued at $400, 2 cattle, 100 bushels of corn, 1 hog, and one
free negro. He is still enrolled in the militia.

In 1867 and 1868, only Mitchell M. Qualls is listed with 109 acres at Grassy Fork
valued at $500, 2 cattle, 3 hogs, and enrolled in militia.

In 1869 and 1870, no Qualls are listed in the tax census of Lewis County, KY.
William began living with Elisha Qualls, his brother, in Carter County. Mitchell Qualls moved to Carter County. Not sure where Johnson went.

  9 v.   Johnson Mitchell Qualls, born 1835 in Scott County, Kentucky. He married (1) Elizabeth McMillian; born June 06, 1863 in Elliott County, Kentucky; died July 20, 1941 in Carter County, Kentucky. He married (2) Mary E. Buckner June 19, 1861 in Lewis County, Kentucky by Mr. Moore, JP with Jacob Rose and D. Rose as witnesses; born 1846 in Lewis County, Kentucky.
  Notes for Johnson Mitchell Qualls:
In the 1870 census, there is a John Qualls, age 8, living with James and Mary
Nolen (age 36, 38) and family in Lewis County, KY. Johnson and William Qualls do not appear in the 1870 census of Lewis County, Ky although they were listed in the tax records in prior years. John Qualls is the child of William and Christina Hicks Qualls. The Nolen's were Christina's grandparents on her
mothers side according to the Lewis County, Ky census information in
Vanceburg, Kentucky.

Mrs. Elizabeth Qualls died July 20, 1941 of chronic senile debility after a duration of 1 year at the age of 78 years 1 month and 14 days. She was born June 6, 1863 in Elliott County, Ky. She was a housewife. Her father Rex Mcmillen and mother Alice Keaton of Elliott County. Informant was Edith Orlemann of Chicago, Illinois. Burial is in Grayson on July 22, 1941. Funeral director was R. F. Cox of Grayson, Ky. the doctor was W. B. Bishop, M.D. of Grayson, Ky.
