After their marriage in 1850, Joseph and Mary pioneered in Maine, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan, Kansas, and Colorado, with five of their children born in Minnesota. Many of his brothers and cousins were with them in most of their travels. Along the way, he worked in mining and logging activities and was a good stonemason. Son John built two business buildings of native stone in Lawrence, Kansas. They acquired and worked a farm in Kansas and later moved the family and farming activities to Porterville, CA. in 1885. Joseph and Mary spent their last years in Summerland, near Santa Barbara.
