LIJAH BYRD WALL:
Elijah and his brother Howell were both drafted (or enlisted) in the Mississippi militia and served as privates in Capt. William A. Lucas' Company from Jan 6 to Mar 31, 1815, when they were both discharged.

Since Howell married first, he may be the oldest, but not necessarily so. Definitely, though, both are older than Charles J. and therefore born between 1790 and 1796.

Elijah's widow, as Sarah Cotton, on 7 Apr 1859, filed a Letter of Application for bounty land, in which she gave her age as 55, and stated that she was born Sarah Welch, she married Elijah B. Wall 2 Jul 1818, he died 20 Mar 1827 in Amite County, she married second Thomas Cotton on 1 May 1845, he died 16 Dec 1848. She remained a widow since that time. One of her witnesses was Bartley B. Wall - other sources show he was her son.

Notes for B
ENJAMIN WALL:
Benjamin Wall was born in South Carolina in late 1801 or early 1802, the sixth of ten children born to Howell and Rebecca Wall. In 1811 Howell moved the family to Amite County, Mississippi. Benjamin married Parnece "Penny" Gordon on June 24, 1822, and they had one daughter, Elseba. Penny died shortly thereafter, and Benjamin married again, on January 10, 1828, to Elizabeth Tompkins. She, too, was born in South Carolina and her family had come to Amite County in the early 1800s. They had four children.

Benjamin was a landowner and farmer in Amite county, as were his father and brothers. Most likely, he and his brother visited Springfield, Louisiana on several occasions, hauling cotton and other goods by wagon for shipment by schooner to New Orleans. They probably camped along the road in Livingston Parish and became familiar with the area, and they were aware of the availability of government land. In 1847, following the death of his mother, Benjamin moved with his family to Livingston Parish, and in the ensuing years he acquired more than 1,000 acres of land, much of it from the United States government. He settled between the Blood River and the Little Natalbany, choosing land suitable for farming and for raising stock, with easy access to water.

All three sons of Benjamin served in the Confederate States Army, and all survived the war, although a lingering illness resulted in the death of Thomas in 1868. Benjamin probably suffered much financial loss in the war, but he continued farming much as before. The slaves of Benjamin Wall included the family of Bill and Mariah Winder. After the war, Bill and his sons continued to work on the farm for Benjamin, and three of the sons, Tom, Alfred and Peter, worked for him until he died in 1883. Tom and another son, Bill, later raised families in the Springfield area.

In Mississippi, Benjamin and Elizabeth had been members first of the Jerusalem Baptist Church, then the Line Creek Baptist Church. In Livingston Parish, they helped build the Bethlehem Baptist Church of Albany, and furnished the land for the building site. Benjamin worked hard for his family and his church, and his succession record in 1883 indicates a simple, honest lifestyle. After his death on January 24, 1883, his heirs donated the two acres of land to the church.
