SCOTT FAMILY AND ITS' COAT OF ARMS Motto: "Trace aut face" (act, or be silent) ARMS: Agent , three lions' heads, erased gules. CREST: A lions' head erased glues. Various designs for coats of arms registered for the family name "Scott" are to be noted, but this design, is considered the most appropriate for those who cannot trace their ancestry to a particular branch. These arms are believed to have been the original shield marking of the Scott, Baronets of Ancrum, Roxburgshire, Scotland, linage of whom date bad to 1128 A.D. It was from this mail line of the Scott family that such famous persons as Michael Scott, known as the "Wizard", and Robert Scott, ancestor of Dukes of Buccleugh descended. It is clearly established that the progenitor of the Scott family in America descended from the main line. John Scott, regarded as the progenitor of the Scott family in America, arrived in New York about the year 1700. He was the Commandant of Fort Hunter, and later obtained a grant of land and remained in the New World. His eldest son, John also obtained land grants, and it is apparent that the family occupied a position of importance and affluence in the affairs of the new nation. John's only son became Gen. John Morin Scott, Secretary of State, of the State of New York. As with all early American families, branches soon spread to all the colonies, and later, to the ever westward frontier, so that today, descendants of John Scott, the original settler, are to be found in every state in the Union. They are well represented in the arts, sciences, and professions, as well as in the world of commerce, and their contributions to the development of the nation are duly acknowledged.
