HISTORY OF PINK HILL AND COUNTRYSIDE

Robert St. Clair and family came to Missouri in 1842 from Virginia, wife & six children. He bought 1000 acres of land. He built a 12 room house on the ground just north of where Ryland Lives (Kirby Road & Truman). The house he built was where Mr. Heck built his house on the road north of Ryland. In the late 1840's a little town started. It grew rather fast and didn't have a name. Robert St. Clair had a General Store along with several more. One day while the neighbor men were sitting around the fire talking, he said why not call it Pink Hill as it was on a hill and wild Verbenas were blooming nearby and were pink. So that is how it became known as Pink Hill.

Mr Knight came from Boston, Mass. and bought ground on south side of road and built a house. The old one is now gone. Also, a one room store in are and the First Post Office was started. People came from miles to get their mail. It was brought by horseback from Independence, by a colored man once a week. The Civil War came and Robert St. Clair and the two oldest boys entered.

The order Number 11 was given, The Kansas Red Legs raided over 3 counties, stealing everything and burning houses. Their house was burned too. The women had to leave and couldn't take anything with them, so they spent the duration of the war in Lexington, Missouri. The Red Legs stole their stock and burn their house, so after the war was over, they came back to nothing. They built a long house. Grandma (Mrs St. Clair) soon died and Grandpa (Robert St. Clair) died April 1869.

Robert St. Clair was shot in the arm above his elbow. Mr. Harve Gardner did it. Mr. Gardner and Mr. Smith were arguing about something, when came upon by Robert St. Clair.. They had their guns pointed at each other. Grandpa put up his arm and said "don't shoot". Mr. Gardner shot and it went through his arm above the elbow. They had to cut his arm off and then gangrene set in and took his life April 1869.

Robert St. Clair's daughter, Emily, married James Wyatt Kirby AKA Dick Kirby. which was my fathers parents. Emily died in 1876 when dad was 6 years old. The Grandpa Kirby later married Aunt Elenor's mother. Will get back to the little town.

Pink Hill had over 300 people and was growing fast. The first school house stood across from the Will Howell place. Later moved where I went to school.
It was thought that the C & A Railroad was coming down Pink Hill Road, but changed and went to what later was Grain Valley. Where Stony point stood was a very small town which was moved down to where the railroad came and changed its name to Grain Valley because a lot of grain was grown and was in a valley. This is how it got it's name.

So Pink Hill began to move to Grain Valley and Oak Grove. The Church was built 1871 and the parsonage two years later. The church started with 13 charter members and grew to 300 at one time. Reverend Peter Cobb was the first pastor there.

The town had 5 (five) Doctors at one time. The Post Office was on time down where the Will Mann's place. He was the last Postmaster for Pink Hill.
Then the mail began to come on rural route from Grain Valley in 1902. It was started July 25 1854 with George W. Love as Postmaster. Independence was established in 1830. The South Methodist Church was started in 1835. During the Civil War it was used as a Hospital.

Jackson County was bought from the Indians in 1825.

Jackson County was granted the county seat in March 20, 1827. The First Court house was built July 2, 1827. It was made of logs and still stands.

George St. Clair's sister married a Mr. Palmer in Pennsylvania. Elmira Hewitts mother's name was Haston. Robert St. Clair went to Missouri acquired 1000 acres of land in Jackson County at Pink Hill - gave each child 100 acres. Mary died first and was buried in the St. Clair Cemetery there.
