Notes for W
ILLIAM SCOTT:
According to Beer's "History of Cumberland County" in "Mr. Peter's report to Governor James Hamilton" he states on page 32 "I give the names of some of the families before 1738... Scotts. Just what year our Scotts came to America we are not certain, except that it was early in the history of Pennsylvania, because we know that one son was killed in 1756 and that 3 others fought with General Braddock. So these sons were adult young men. We do not know who the parents of these sons were at this time.

Patrick Scott lives about a mile on the Paris road from North Middleton on Scott's Branch. Patricks first wife was a Campbell, daughter of William Campbell.

Their tradition stated that William Scott was born on the Atlantic Ocean, arriving in America in 1745 (this was too late, as he fought with Braddock in 1755. They said his mother died soon after and his father married a second time. and had several sons, Joseph, John and others.

From the "History of Bourbon Co., Ky" pp 121-557 we know that Willima Scott came down the Ohio River and settled near what is now Louisville, with 18 new families from Sherman's Valley, near Carlsisle, PA. The families helped defend the Fort at Corn Island for George Rogers Clark and then fled for refuge to the Fort at Harrodsburg, Kentucky which they defended stoutly to save their lives and families. Until the close of the Revolutionary War, these pioneers were in a continuous stat of warfare against the savages living mostly in forts for the preservation of their lives and families.

Notes for H
ELEN MONTGOMERY:
Tradition has come down that Helen Montgomery was scalped by Indians. We do know that this was the fate of Elizabeth Graham Galloway and her little son, as described in the Pennsylvania Gazette of November 13, 1755.

Margaret was the 3rd child and only daughter of William and Helen Montgomery Scott. She was born in Pennsylvania, probably near Carlisle, Comberland County. She was brought to Kentucky in 1778, then a small child.

Many names were nicknamed in early times. WE find there was almost and invariable rule about certain names. For instance Margaret was always "Peggy"; and Mary was "Polly" and later "Molly"; Jane was Jennie, etc.
