Notes for L
UCY FRANCIS BATES:
(by Gladys Cox)

Lucy Bates lived with Ed and Ruby Miller-Cox in her old age. She was blind. When she was 16 years old her mother left her. She found people to live with and made clothes for them and their children. Lucy's mother was not liked much because she left Lucy.

Lucy's mother claims that their family was the first family of Virgina.

(Grandmother) Lucy told us many times her mother bound her to Mr. & Mrs. Brown and her mother ( a widow ) took two older daughters to Ohio.

My grandmother always said her mother claimed to be from First Families of Virginia and believed her mothers maiden name was Francis. My Grandfather during the Civil war went from Kentucky into Virginia to enlist in Confederate Army. She was left with three small sons "Foster, Edward Miller (my father) and Leslie.

Grandfather served with Morgans raiders - was reported captured with Morgans at one time he was put into prison. They both escaped. No record of length of time he served. Grandmother said she only heard from her mother one time from Ohio. She wrote and asked her to come to Ohio where she work was plentiful, but not to bring the 3 little boys but rather bound them out to families in Kentucky. A custom of the times. She refused to do this and never heard from her mother or sisters again.

She always said she was treated very well in the Brown's home before she was married.
