Descendants of Jasper Pillow

Generation No. 1

        1.  Jasper1 Pillow was born circa 1715 in Virginia, and died Bef. 1763.  He married Mary [--?--].  She died Unknown.

Notes for Jasper Pillow:

One source claimed that Jasper Pillow was married to Mary Macon and that he died in 1777 or 1780 in Guilford Co., North Carolina.

Jasper Pillow may have died before 1763 since there are tax records listing Mary as the head of household starting in 1763 in Amelia Co., Virginia. The name Jasper comes from tradition of the Pillow family in Middle Tennessee as recorded in Ramsey's Annals of Tennessee (originally published in 1853). The tradition was that Jasper came from England to Virginia about 1740. The name Jasper has been passed down in the Pillow family even as late as 1850. There was a Jasper Pillow in 1850 census living in Henry Co., Tennessee.

The tradition may have the name correct but it seems likely that tradition was wrong by over a century as to the time that the Pillow immigrant first reached Virginia. There is a record of a Jasper Pillar being in Virginia by the year 1648. See Cavaliers and Pioneers, p. 177, Patent Book no. 2, the name of Jasper Pillar(s) appears on a list of ten persons whose transportation to America was paid by Randall Crew. Randall Crew then received the patent to 460 acres in Nansemond Co., Virginia on Sept. 9, 1648. See also Early Virginia Immigrants 1623-1666 (edited by George Cabell Greer, published at Baltimore by Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., 1978). This listing was originally published in 1912 and lists the name as Jasper Pillars, 1648, by Randall Crew (patentee or party bringing him over), Nansemond County, Virginia.

So it is suspected that Jasper Pillow, the patriarch of the Pillow family in Amelia Co., Virginia was somehow a descendant of the Jasper Pillar who was in Virginia as early as 1645 to 1648. The intervening generations are not known and may never be known because of the lack of records in some of the counties through which the family probably passed before coming to Amelia County.

Jasper Pillar/Pillow was probably born about 1620 in England and died sometime after 1648 in Essex Co., Virginia. He was probably the one married to Mary Leigh, daughter of Capt. William Leigh. Mary Pellow inherited 1000 acres from Captain William Leigh on Oct. 8, 1653 in Gloucester Co., Virginia. The land was located on Poropotank Creek along the Charles River (later known as the York River).

Jasper and Mary (Leigh) Pillow may have been the parents of the John Pillow and Jasper Pillow who show up in some early records in Essex Co., Virginia. They may have also had a daughter named Mary, born about 1634 who died in 1714. She may have been married first to a Mr. Coghill and later a Mr. Duksberry.

Essex Co., Virginia, Will of George Duksbery of St. Mary's Parish, Essex Co., Virginia, dated Nov. 5, 1715, probated Dec. 20, 1715, p. 430. Among the recipients of George's estate were Jasper Pollow, and John Pillow. Jasper was to receive 550 lbs. of tobacco.

[Note: Thanks to Cleve Weathers of Nashville, Tennessee, for the information focusing on "Mary Pellow" in Gloucester Co., Virginia in 1653.]

Notes for Mary [--?--]:

One source gave a doubtful lineage for Mary. It was claimed that Mary was the daughter of Gideon Hunt Macon and Priscilla Jones. The Macon family had a record of a daughter named Mary but she was said to have married James Johnson, not Jasper Pillow.

Gideon Hunt Morgan died in 1761 and was a son of John Macon and Anne Hunt (who later married a Minge). John Macon was a son of Gideon Macon and Martha Woodard.

Gideon Macon was born in England and died on 8 Dec 1701 in New Kent Co., Virginia and was buried on Macon's Island.

John Pillow had a grant application for 640 acres in North Carolina; there is no record of John Pillow owning land in Davidson County, Tennessee until he purchased 50 acres in 1792 from Samuel Barton "on Brown's Creek" (which actually appears merely to be near Brown's Creek). Deed Book C, pp. 2-3. January 10, 1792. Samuel Barton for 40 pounds current money sells 50 acres on waters of Browns Creek to John Pillow. This land was conveyed to Samuel Barton by John Brown by deed dated July 14, 1791 and to the said Brown by Francis Armstrong by deed date July 8, 1788, being part of the said Armstrongs preemption.         Some sources list a son William Pillow born to John D. Pillow and his first wife, Anne Berry Pillow. However, he was not mentioned as a grandson in the will of Joseph Berry, dated 1812, in Prince Edward Co., Virginia, in which Joseph Berry did specifically mention his two grandsons, Joseph and John Piller. William Pillow is said to have had 14 children, only one of which was a son who died without male descendants. William is said to have moved to Brenham, Washington Co., Texas. It does not seem likely that John D. Pillow and Anne Berry Pillow had more than the two sons, Joseph B. Pillow and John H. Pillow.
