      109. Maria Del Carmen, born in Columbia, South America.

Notes for Henri Louis Villaume Ducoudray-Holstein:
Born about 1760 in Holsteinborg, Holstein, Germany and was baptized in the Reformed Church. Probably descended from a Huguenot family. Highly-educated and raised in a bi-lingual household speaking French and German; also spoke Spanish, English, and some Danish.

1795: As a professor, on leave at Hamburg, Germany.

Under the fictitious name of Peter Feldman and posing as a Danish merchant, contributed to Lafayette's escape from prison in Olmutz, Austria. A semi-autobiographical account of this adventure is provided in his book, _Memoirs of Gilbert M. Lafayette_, 2nd edition, John Greves &Co.: Geneva, NY, 1835. [First edition publisher Charles Wiley: England, 1824 ... preface of author dated New York 9/4/1824.] In the introduction, he describes himself as "a soldier, who has fought for the rights of man in the old world and the new."

Served in the French Revolutionary armies under Napolean. Taken prisoner and held captive at Cadiz. With help from a certain Spanish officer and financial support from resident Mexicans, he departed Cadiz for Philadelphia in February 1813. Was denied entry into the U.S. military. He travelled to Natchitoches, Louisiana in May 1813. He possibly fought with the Spanish Republicans in Texas.

By 1814, Du Coudray-Holstein was in Columbia. He fought for Bolivar and later recorded his adventures in _Memoirs of Simon Bolivar_. He came to dislike Bolivar for his "zealous and aredent patriotism" when he took control of all three branches of the Colombian government.

In 1816, he left to live in Aux Cayes, Haiti. There he supported himself and his family as a piano teacher.

In 1820, he moved to Caracao (or the Danish Island of St. Thomas?) because he needed to make more money for his family then he could in Haiti.

In 1822, apparently with backing from the U.S.-Government, he organized an attempted revolution against the Spanish authorities in Puerto Rico using business-backed mercenaries. He visited Philadelphia in August 1822 in connection with this effort and chartered a ship armed with munitions and false Dutch papers. Something went wrong with the plan, and the U.S. Government denied any involvement with him. Later, his death sentence was commuted because of influence from LaFayette and the U.S. Government and, he was allowed to emigrate to the United States.

Upon first arriving in the United States, he presented a course on military tactics in New York City.

Later he became a Professor of Modern Languages at Geneva College (now Hobart & Smith) near Albany New York. About 1835, he became a Professor of Modern Languages at the Albany Female Academy. He wrote a French text for his students based on the theory that a language should be taught without undue translations. He attempted to start a new school near Albany but was unable to raise the necessary funds.
