Notes for Nathan Fish:
As he was only five days old when his mother died and less than five years old when his father died, he was taken by his grandmother, Mary Havens, and remained with her at Shelter Island, New York until he was twelve. He then returned and was sent to school under the famous Master Niles. His guardians were Thomas Mumford and Mary Havens. He was heir to a large estate ...

...He was faintly remembered by his greatgrandson, Rev. Fredericc Denison, who was but three at his death. He remembered him sitting in the corner of the front room near thr fireplace with short clothes, silver shoe and knee buckles, long waistcoat, and white flowing hair -- a patriarch. Known as a "Gentleman of the Old School," he was a man of serene philosophy, a large property-holder, inclined to the quiet enjoyments of the home, not interested in political affairs, although he was a Justice of the Peace and represented Groton in the State Legislature (as Captain Fish), in 1771. On July 25, 1755, he united with the Baptist Society. He built to the west of his grandfather, Samule Fish, and about halfway between the highway and the house now occupied by Alden Fish (which was built in 1800 by Nathan's son Sands), and the highway leading from Cow Hill was opened in 1818.
