2. WILLIAM² BUTLER (JOHN¹) was born 1786 in KY, and died 22 January 1847 in Polk Co TX. He married (1) SOPHIA STARR 03 February 1808 in Christian Co KY. She was born in KY, and died in KY. He married (2) SARAH (BUTLER) Abt. 1818. She was born Bet. 1799 - 1800 in KY, and died November 1849 in Polk Co TX.

State of Texas - Polk County
Be it known that I, James P. Collins, an acting Justice of the Peace in and for the County aforesaid do hereby state that William Butler of said county, about sixty years old, and well known to me as a sober, mature, truthful and honest man, personally appeared before me and made oath to the following facts (to wit): "In the year eighteen hundred and two when I was about sixteen years old., my father with his family resided in Logan County Kentucky. Robert Rankin with his wife Peggy Rankin and his family removed and settled within two miles of my Father, and that both families resided at their respective places for two years. They then separated and again resided near each other in the States of Alabama and Mississippi. In eighteen hundred three Thomas B. Rankin, the oldest son, was a bearded man and grown, and I am feeling satisfied that he must have been at least twenty years old. I have seen and examined the deposition of Williford Cartwright and I verily believe all the material facts therein contained as they correspond with my own recollection of details which I often heard as my father had been in the Revolutionary War at the same time with Robert Rankin. I have seen the family record (a transcript of which accompanies the deposition of said Cartwright) and I believe it to be genuine and true, as from the appearance, as from my knowledge of the various members of the family. Owing to the intimate and frequent intercourse of the families of my Father and Robert, I have often heard both Mr. and Mrs. Rankin speak of their marriage which they said took place while he was on furlough from the army; and that he left for the army again and did not return home until after the war which, to the best of my recollection, was about two years. My recollection of the Rankin family is more particular from the fact that Jno K.Rankin, the fourth son in the family, married a sister of mine in 1815 or 1816 and I have resided within eighteen miles of Mrs.Peggy Rankin in Texas for years and often see her and other members of the family. Aug 3, 1843 William Butler made obligation to Thomas Haynes for a tract of land in Polk Co (now San Jacinto Co) west of the Trinity River bordering on south by FH Rankin, on west by James Rankin, and on north by Mathew Hubert consisting of 296 acres.

WILL - made 23 Aug 1840 and probated 31 May 1847:
In the name of God Amen. I William Butler being yet of sound mind and memory yet laboring under sore affliction and feeling my bodily strength failing and believe my end near of my natural life do by the duty imposed on me as a husband, parent and citizen make, constitute and ordain this my last will and testament. That my wife Sarah have and retain possession of all my lands and possessions on which we now live during her natural life or widowhood and that all or so much as is necessary of all my other property be sold to pay my debts except a certain Negro woman named Nancy which is her own property inherited by heirship and at her death or remarrying all the provision bequeathed or settled on her my wife must be divided equally amongst all of my children and further it is my will and wish that John R. Johnson be my executor with my wife Sarah. [That the words "named Nancy" were interlined between the seventeenth and eighteenth lines before assigned and forming a part of the eighteenth line] And this my last will made at my residence in the Republic of Texas, North Division of Liberty County 23 August AD1840 and solemnized by being signed by me in the presence of witnesses and in my proper sences (sic). March 9, 1847 - Sarah Butler widow of William Butler petitioned for letters of administration and was appointed May 31. She filed an inventory of estate July 25. That modest inventory did not contain anything to indicate he farmed more that enough to support his family and had only a minimal amount of stock. However, he was a beekeeper having 23 hives.

Sarah Butler died Nov. 1849 according to the Polk Co 1850 Mortality Schedule (age 50 - born in KY)

COURT DOCKET - County Court, July Term 1851 Application for final settlement & C.
Whereas James Winn, Administrator of said Estate having presented to the Court his final exhibit and account of said Estate for final settlement, and the Court being satisfied that the notice herein ordered has been given proceeded to examine said account and exhibit, and after careful examination, audits and settles the same and ordered that the vouchers presented to be filed and recorded by the Clerk and after payment of all the debts against the Estate, the sum of four hundred and twenty five 20/100 dollars is left in the hands of Admin. and subject to distribution & partition among the heirs of said Estate and from enquiry & testimony, the heirs of said Estate found to be: John Childress & wife, Susan; Edward Irons & wife, Mary; Stephen Butler, Henry Butler, John Butler, Elisha Irons & wife, Delila; Silas M. Butler, Leander Butler, Kessiah Butler, who are adults & Elizabeth Butler, a minor, who are each entitled to one tenth part of said sum above named and Wm. S. Vance having presented to the Court transfers duly authenticated by the above name adult heirs, to him for their interest in said Estate. It is therefore ordered by the Court that Jas. Winn, administrator of said Estate, pay to W. S. Vance the sum of Three hundred and Eighty two 68/100 Dollars, being the interest of the said nine adults heirs, which leaves the sum of the minor Elizabeth of Forty-two 52/100 Dollars in the hands of said Winn, Admin. It is therefore ordered by the Court that James Winn be and is hereby appointed guardian Ad.Litem of the said minor & it appearing to the satisfaction of the Court that said administrator has accounted for all the assets -that has come into his hands and that all debts against the same have been paid, also the distributive shares of all the adult heirs. It is therefore ordered by. the Court that James Winn, Administrator of the Estate of Wm. Butler Dec'd. be and is hereby discharged from all further liability or responsibility of the same and is discharged from his trusts as aforesaid.

Notes for SARAH (BUTLER):
In Jan 1851 William S. Vance was appointed administrator of Sarah Butler's estate. Application for final settlement in May 1852showed that the estate was valued at $785. Heirs named to receive a share were John Childress and wife Susan (Susannah), Edward Irons and wife Mary, Stephen Butler, Henry Butler , John Butler (Jonathan), Elisha Irons and wife Delila, Silas M. Butler, Leander Butler, Kesiah Butler, Elizabeth Butler a minor. Landon died before William's will proved.

Sarah Butler died Nov. 1849 according to the Polk Co 1850 Mortality Schedule (age 50 - born in KY)

Notes for LANDEN A BUTLER:
Smith Co TX Probate Records page 22 shows John R Butler petitioning the court for administration of Landen's estate and was approved on 7 June 1855. His estate consisted of his 320 acre land grant. His heirs were Stephen A Butler (brother), John R Butler (brother), Edward Irons as guardian of Child Irons (from first marriage to Mary Butler sister), Silas M Butler (brother), Henry C Butler (brother), Kesiah Butler Irons (now second wife of Edward Irons), Leander G Butler (brother), Delilah and Elisha Irons (sister and brother-in-law), and Elizabeth Butler (sister).
No mention is made of his supposed wife Mary Ann Ricks or supposed child Candacy Butler Pullin.

Footprints of Hiram Rand Pullin by Geraldyne Spenser claims:
"Hiram R (Pullin) and his wife Candacy Butler, the daughter of Landon Butler and Mary Ann Ricks, had settled their family in Karnes County." Could this be another "Landon" instead of this one as some researchers assume.
