I have a copy of the newspaper announcement.His obituary was printed in Dec 1944 in Daviess Co.?, KY?81 in an unknown newspaper. Per Pat Hartlage, there was a New Year's ad on the back: Staff Sergeant Sylvester "Beck" Mattingly, son of Mr. C.C. Mattingly, of Knottsville, and Pvt. Harold Louis Taylor, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sherman Taylor, Livermore Road, were killed in action in the European theater of war, according to word received from the War Department. The two heroes are graduates of the Daviess County High School, Sgt. Mattingly being a graduate of the 1934 class, and Pvt. Taylor of the 1929 class. They are the fifth and sixth alumni of the school to give their lives for their country. Sgt. Mattingly, who was with an infantry unit, was killed in action in Southern France on November 20 according to word received by his sister, Mrs. D. E. Roby of Owensboro, on December 6. He volunteered for service in the U.S. Army, February 28, 1941. He was first sent to Ft. Lewis, Washington, and from there to Ft. Ord, California, and then to Camp Pickett, Virginia. He was then sent overseas and landed in French Morocco about November 2, 1942. From the battlefields of Africa he sent to Sicily, and from there to Italy where he was seriously wounded September 29, 1943. He was sent to a hospital in North Africa where he spent three months, and from there was sent back to his division. He was again wounded, but slightly, and remained for treatment in a hospital in Italy. He rejoined his comrades in Southern Italy, and was with them in Southern France where he was fatally wounded. He is survived by his father, six sisters and five brothers: Mrs. D. E. Roby and Mrs. Nannie Mae Higdon, Owensboro; Mrs. Kate Dishman, Detroit; Mrs. Mary Calahan and Mrs. Helen Abel, Louisville; Mrs. Pauline Aull, Knottsville; Garland and Eugene Mattingly, Louisville; Casper and Joseph Mattingly, Knottsville; Eugene Mattingly, Louisville; and Herman Mattingly, Owensboro. (MIKE: Eugene was listed twice and my grandfather not at all. My mother knew nothing about the death of her father's half-brother.) His obituary was printed on 7 Dec 1944 in Owensboro, Daviess Co., KY.20 On p. 1 of the Owensboro Inquirer dated 7 Dec 1944 (with photo), it reads: "KILLED IN ACTION--Staff Sergeant Beck Mattingly, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Mattingly, 621 West Highland Avenue, was killed in action in France, November 20, according to word received from the War Department. He was with an infantry unit, having been in the Army three years, and overseas two years." He served in the military 21 Feb 1941 to 20 Nov 1944 in France.82 |
