OMINIC PONTEVIVO:
PONTEVIVO DOMENIC (1841 - 1889)

Domenic PONTEVIVO is the son of Angelo . He was a widower at the time of his marriage to Alice Enright.

Ref: The Bicentennial Dictionary Pre 1829 - 1888 Vol 3 K-Q.

Pontivivo, Dominic. Arrived from Vasse (Busselton, WA) to Fremantle 21.6.1878 with 3 Malay crew of "Mary" wrecked at Lockeville, married 1st Ellen, married 2nd Alice Enright. Child Henry John born 1886 (Fremantle RC), Mary Laura born 1888. Took his family to Geraldton from Fremantle 1882/3. His first wife Ellen was murdered at Sharks Bay 24.1.1883. A 27 year old Creole, Isaac Suzetti, was acquitted of the charge after a trial in Perth, Western Australia 11.7.1883.

Ellen Pontivivo buried in Sharks Bay, Western Australia, (Death cert No. is 11810/83). (See her notes sheet with regard to her murder)

He Married Alice Enright ( daughter of John and Mary) on Monday 16th February 1885 at the Church of St. Patrick in Fremantle, this being the Catholic Church. (attached is a copy of their Wedding cert). There is a difference of spelling in the Church records.

There were two children born to this marriage, Henry Joseph (28th January 1886) and Laura Mary, her date of birth unknown.

There is no information on where Domenic and Alice lived, but as he was a seaman, one would except they lived in the Fremantle area.

The last ship Domenic sailed on was the "SS FLINDERS", which left the Port of Fremantle on the 27th February 1889, bound for Derby in the North West of Western Australia.

It was on this voyage that Domenic died (ref his death cert.) though the log book on the ship does not record it. One does not know if he was buried at sea or returned to port for burial. He was 48 years of age when he died so thats puts his birth year around 1841.

The Adelaide Steam Ship was the owners of the SS Flinders and they were unable to supply any data on his death ( letter attached)

The J S Battye Library of Western Australian History were able to supply a lot of data on the sailing record at the time of Domenic's death (letter attached)

A full copy of Domenics death cert. may show where he was buried along with other useful information. The registration of his death is 174/89 ( Extract from death entry attached)

1995: Records show that Dominic is buried in Carnarvon, WA.

LICE ENRIGHT:
ALICE ENRIGHT is the daughter of John Enright and Mary (nee Delaney) and was born in Templemory, Ireland.

She was Domonic's second wife and after his death she married Thomas Winn. The date of this marriage was on 23 January 1890, at the Presbyterian Church, Perth, Western Australia

Alice may have had a baby born out of Wedlock, Ref. MAUD in Alice's 1st Marriage

She had two children to this marriage, Thomas b1890 and Maria b1893.

You may notice I have spelt their surname "WINN". the reason I have done this is that is the way it is recorded on Thomas birth certificate. Thomas (son of Thomas and Alice) changed the spelling of his surname to "WYNNE" and added a second name of John. This was done by deed poll on the 21st of September 1950 at Maylands, Western Australia. What made him change the spelling is not known, because his half- brother, Henry's Army discharge papers in 1919, shows his name as Wynne.

Thomas Jnr. was married to Ella (surname not known). They had no children

Maria is thought to have not married.

Alice was once again was widowed in 1899, and her son Thomas was placed in Contarf Boys Home on the 24 June 1899. The entry date to the home states the following:

"Thomas was placed in the home by the Department because of destitution, in good health and mild education level, his parents listed as Father is dead and Mother is employed somewhere in Fremantle. Thomas left Clontarf on June 24th, 1905 and was apprenticed to a Farmer in Northam."

Alice was in the Women's Home, Perth. (address unknown) from ? till 20th May 1907, when she was committed to the Fremantle Lunitic Asylumn. She was tranfered to Claremont Hospital for the Insane in 1909.

(ref: Committal papers by two doctors, papers signed by 2 JP's, the Police papers and telegrams to her sister Mrs Hannam.

Alice died on the 25th September, 1916 aged 59, at the Hospital for the Insane at Claremont, Western Australia and was buried in the Roman Catholic portion of the Karrakatta Cemetery. Death Cert. No. 212/1916 Claremont, Western Australia: The cemetery registration number is KBO17792.

The cause of her death was (a) Phthisis and (b) Heart Failure.

For reseach purposes one should use both spellings ie: "WINN or WYNNE"
