  Notes for Jeremiah Walling:
"JERRY WALLING, proprietor of a garage and service station in Springfield, Union County, New Jersey, was born in Paterson, New Jersey, May 27, 1890, son of William M. and Anna (Stuart) Walling (sic), his father a machinist. The lad Jerry was educated in the public schools of Paterson, New Jersey, finishing in high school (sic !!!!!), after which he learned the machinist's trade, becoming an expert in automobile work. In 1920 he located in Springfield, bought a business location, and there, on July 1st, started a garage and service station to provide for the needs of automobilists. He maintains a modernly-equiped service station, and Walling's is becoming well-known to car owners as a good place to call for supplies , assistance or service. During the World War period Mr. Walling served with Company 69, of the Home Guard Defense Battalion. He is a Republican in politics, and a member of the Lutheran church.
In East Orange, New Jersey, March 29, 1916, Mr. Walling married Elizabeth I. Day (sic), born September 26, 1892, daughter of William A. and Irene Day, her father a jewelry toolmaker. Mr. and Mrs. Walling are the parents of a son, William E. Walling." - Honeyman (ed.), History of Union County,NJ 1664-1923, vol III, p. 230.

2) According to WEW they tried to bury the wrong man. I believe my grandfather was in Irvington when he was struck by a passing vehicle while entering his own car. He suffered a severe head injury and died later in hospital. I seem to recall that it fell to Uncle Ev to go to Lyndhurst and tell the boys. Thirty years later he remembered tapping on the window trying to rouse my father who was sleeping on the couch. He seemed to think that was better than banging on the front door. My grandmother scandalized her mother by choosing to have the funeral from a funeral home rather than her own home. While she and my father waited at the Mortuary, the Funeral Director asked them what my grandfather had died of. This struck my father as a rather odd question and checking up he discovered that the wrong body had been retrieved from the hospital. Aunt Grace once told me that Uncle Brad commented at the funeral that given my grandfather's love of automobiles it was ironic that he only got to ride in a really fine one by dying. Following the funeral, Grandma said, family and friends came to her house to comfort her and in the process began looking at the old photo albums (which I have scanned). Sorrow and solemnity were replaced by hysterical laughter at the pictures of women in their high-fashion hats c. 1912.
