I am researching the history of the French and Spanish governments in Mobile Alabama concentrating on the French and English population. The first English setlers began arriving on the Tombigbee and Alabama Rivers just above the French settlements on the Mobile River after 1775. The area in which the English settled here was a part of the Upper Creek Indian Territory. Many of the first Englsihmen married Creek Indian women according to the Indian custom and fathered children. These marriages were often in addition to the lawful wives left back in the Carolinas. The offspring of the Indian weddings constitutes a branch of the ancestors of many families still living in Alabama and points west thereof as the people moved westward.
Families researched: McGillivray, Prater (Prather), Brashears, Oliver Merida Smth Family, Josiah Wallace family, John Caney family, Young Gaines Family and related families.
