Notes for C
HARLES HENRY LENTZ:
[This material was graciously supplied by a cousin, Becky Dormady, with whom we made contact over the internet. Charles Lentz was her gg grandfather through Stuart Lentz, the son of Charles and Catherine. She also shared her research with us including many important and unknown facts and their sources.]

"The first German immigrants to Maryland settled in the Western part of the state, establishing new communities such as Frederick and Hagerstown. These settlers were farmers, cultivating the land with such diverse crops as wheat, rye, barley, and corn as well as orchards for apples and peaches. In the mid to late eighteenth century a large German population began settlement in Baltimore. Contrary to the rural nature of Western Maryland, the character of the city required more tradesman, not farmers. Some of the earliest German residents of Baltimore were brewers, silversmiths, harness makers, innkeepers and butchers like Charles Lentz.

Like his mother and father before him, Charles H. Lentz was born in Germany on April 29, 1853. While still a young man, in 1877, at about the age of twenty-four, he came to America, settling in Baltimore. Here he would live among a large German population. By the 1880's and 1890's fully one-third of the city's population spoke German. Why he may have left Germany we may never know, but the leading cause of emigration at about this time was political oppression. On September 21, 1892, fifteen years after arriving in America, Charles Lentz was naturalized. According to his Naturalization Certificate, Charles Lentz was a minor when naturalized. However if his birth date is correct he would have been thirty-nine.

Charles Lentz married Catherine "Kattie" Kreiner in about 1882. Like Charles, Catherine was also of German descent but she had been born in Baltimore.

In 1890 Charles H. Lentz appears in the Baltimore City Directory. At this time he resided at 525 West Street in Baltimore and he was a butcher.

By 1900 when the U. S. Census was taken, Charles H. Lentz was living at 13 West Street in Baltimore. His occupation was listed as that of a beef butcher but he had been unemployed for ten months. He was able to read, write and speak English and according to the census he rented a home.

In 1920 Charles Lentz was living at 1601 Clifton avenue, where it appears he lived for the rest of his life. According to this census he and his parents were born in Berlin. He was working as a beef butcher and was listed as an employer."

Notes for C
ATHERINE KREINER:
These notes are quoted from Becky Dormady, a cousin, who shared this information with us.

"Catherine Kreiner was born in Baltimore, Maryland on July 4, 1864 to German immigrants. Her mother provided her with a very strict Catholic upbringing.

According to the 1900 Census "Kattie" Lentz was born in July of 1863 in Maryland. At this time she could read, write and speak English. She had seven children, five of whom lived with her and her husband Charles at 13 West Street.

According to an Ancestral File, Family Group Record, a Catherine Keiner was born in Baltimore about 1895 and no further information is given about her. This Catherine Kreiner was born to John L. Kreiner of Baden, Germany and Mary Barbara Winheimer also born in Baden. She had three sisters and eight brothers. Mary Barbara Kreiner and the brothers were all recorded as being buried in New Cathedral Cemetery, just like Catherine Lentz.

In the 1920 census Catherine gives the place of birth of her parents but it is crossed out. It appears that it could have said Bavaria."
