| The Wansel family is made up of a unique blend of ethnic and cultural histories. The surname itself is so unique that we have had some difficulty finding out exactly where in the world the Wansel family originated. In America, those with the surname, Wansel, have been located in several states: New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, Missouri, and California and have been found in records dating back to the 18th century. Our family, primarily African-American, have resided in the greater Baltimore, Maryland area including Frederick County. My records begin with MARSHALL WANSLER (and his wife, RACHEL M.) who were both listed as mulatto in the 1880 Maryland soundex. Marshall was born in 1840, Virginia. Descendents of Marshall include: WILLIAM THOMPSON WANSEL, born in 1870, Frederick, Maryland. ERMINA, born on June 16, 1897 in Frederick, Maryland. EDWARD EARLESTON, born May 31, 1900, Frederick, Maryland. MARY ESTELLE, born December 4, 1910, Frederick, Maryland. LEROY JOSEPH WANSEL, born February 25, 1921 in Pennsylvania. At the present, our family, which calls Gettysburg, Pennsylvania home, continues to be a microcosm of the greater "melting pot" in which we live. Other families names which I am researching that can be linked to the Wansel family are: ROBINSON, REED, AND ROBERTS |
