I found the following in a book called "Ninety-Six" South Carolina's Last
Frontier by Carl Julien.. it is mostly a photo book.. Julien was from
Greenwood SC. This book contains some great B/W pictures!!

Ann was a daughter of Wm. Calhoun & Agnes Long Calhoun. Ann Calhoun & Isaac
Mathews was the parents of Capt Joseph Mathews who was long the
"parsecutor" of Hopewell Presbyterian Church which was about half way
between Abbeville & McCormick. It was his duty as parsecutor to parcel out
the lines of the hymns to be sung by the congregation. He built himself a
little railed enclosure right under the pulpit and there would sit facing
the congregation. When the preacher kept going too long or said something
Capt. Mathews did not like the Capt. would give a snort. If this sign of
disapproval did not work he would fold his arms and go to sleep or pretend
to.

When chided about his habit by a fellow member of the church he replied:" I
was full and could hold no more." Then he repeated a saying of the much
beloved Presbyterian pastor Dr Wm. Barr (who served in the section) "Where
weariness begins edification ends"

I might have sent the above before to the list but I thought it was pretty
"cool" . I might have sent the following also but since Fortescues were
mentioned (Mary Jane Fortescue married Thomas Jefferson Mathews s/o Joseph C
Mathews). I have the following Fortescue info:

Martha M (listed as E sometimes) & Nancy E FORTESCUE were baptised/joined at
Hopewell Oct. 26 1855. They are both listed as dismissed in a roll that has
no date. (This from Hopewell Presbyterian Records)

Jan 24 1848 Joseph C Mathews inventories the estate of Thomas Fortescue.

I have no info about how these Fortescues fit together or even if they do.
