| Full many a gem of purest ray serene The dark unfathom'd caves of ocean bear: Full many a flower is born to blush unseen, And waste its sweetness on the desert air. ............................................................... Far from the madding crowd's ignoble strife, Their sober wishes never learn'd to stray; Along the cool sequester'd vale of life They kept the noiseless tenor of their way. ............................................................... 'One morn I miss'd him on the custom'd hill, Along the heath and near his fav'rite tree; Another came; nor yet beside the rill, Nor up the lawn, nor at the wood was he; 'The next with dirges due in sad array Slow through the church-way path we saw him borne. Approach and read (for thou canst read) the lay Graved on the stone beneath yon aged thorn: ............................................................... This family tree is an amalgam of contributions put together over the years by various people; especially my brother, Alex Rae. There are omissions and possibly errors and many ancestors missing from the record as sadly their footprints in the dust of history have been blown away by the winds of time. Happily the scribes of the parish vicars and record keepers noted their passing and recorded their loves and lives and offspring. The purpose of this tree was, for me, to establish and pursue the origins of the Barrs in Furness. Sadly no-one has yet to make the jump from here to Barr, Ayrshire or Barr, Renfrewshire or anywhere else for that matter. I feel that I am close to that link; I have found links to Bayre and Bare that appear to match but caution dictates I must be sure; my next visit to England will be used to expand those links. I would like to especially thank the following; Mark Carlton Ward who generously allowed me access to his family tree which gave me about 90% of the Ward information and Peter Thompson for his family tree. I have also added the Gillbanks family tree coutesy of Jim Gillbanks whose family are linked to mine via Isabella Barr. Thanks also to Ted Humphreys who has done so much hard work on the Barrs including his terrific and worthwhile book on the Barr family. Ted has been a support and encouragement to me in my on-going endeavours. Throughout this record the ancient and great counties of Lancashire, Westmorland and Cumberland are referred to as they are and have been for over a thousand years before the sad and unnecessary massacre by Heath-Walker political reforms of 1971. It was never the intention to change the geographical names of the counties but the newly created councils, and the Post Office, to their shame gleefully removed the signs. One day perhaps they will be put back... The modern, and bogus, county of "Cumbria" only exists for the purpose of records from that County council. I am equally enthused and enamoured of my home village. The wonderful Kirkby-in-Furness so sadly abused and battered by some of the modern monstrosities that pass for new homes or extensions or "improvements." How the ancients would despise the modern folly but that is progress... I have many photos and memories of long ago, before and after and will, one day, contribute those to the benefit of those who care or are interested. www.history-of-kirkby.org/ All contributions and comments are gratefully welcome!!! Tony A new section here.... Barr Talk Look up Barr Village in Ayrshire and Barr in Renfrewshire, there is a nice but small castle there; Barr Castle and Loch Barr. |
