| WILLIAM PAINE BROWN 1815-1896 William Paine Brown; We as a family would like to know more about the man, we know his descendants but nothing much about him. He had a thriving boat building yard at Te Wahapu, which he started with his friend William Gardner in 1838. When William Gardner died in 1853 William Brown brought Gardner's share of the business. He built boats up to 18 months before he died in 1896. Books that have been written about ship/boat building yards around New Zealand only have a couple of lines on William Paine Brown's yard and yet several of the well known names had worked for or where apprenticed to William Brown. |
