I am researching the WARD, COLE, DEWEY, DUMONT, BOTSFORD, MONROE (also spelled MANROW), DOANEfamilies who settled upstate and western NY in the early 19th century. The Deweys lived in Schoarie County NY. My ancestor Charles Dewey married into the Barber family (reported family head John Barber), also of Schoharie County, NY. I am looking for information on this BARBER family. Another ancestor is RUEBEN WARNER BOTSFORD whosettled early in the Auburn NY area but then moved to Allegany County, NY. He is from two old Connecticut families, the WARNERS and the BOTSFORDS.Warner married a RUTH MORGAN, also born in NY. I have been unable to find any information about her familly. The COLE family is Dutch having anglicized their name from KOOL. They are descendants of BARENS KOOLl, an early settler of New Amsterdam. I have zero information about any English Coles. The WARD line descends from WILMOTH WARD who reportedly was born in Chenango County NY in 1816 or 1817 and died in Madison County NY in 1893.I know nothing about his ancestry. The DUMONT family descends from WALLERAND and PETER DUMONT, a very prominent New Amsterdam, Esopus, NY and Somerset County NJ family. They settled in Steuben County, NY before moving on to Allegany County, NY. I have fairly complete information on the early COLE (KOOL) and DUMONT families. The BOTSFORD family has a wonderful genealogical record and an active family association. The DEWEY record is superb as well with a family history of over 1,000 pages. I must insert one major caveat. The best genealogists in America believe that the royal ancestry claim (from the RICHARD LYMAN line) cannot be proven. If any one believes they can prove it, I would like to see the evidence. S.Neither of these histories are on line so researchers MUST consult hard copies of the genealogies. The Monroe line is not published anywhere but parts of it should be soon (by me), but it has been extensively and professionally researched, particularly by genealogist Ruth VanDusen Tanner. Ruth and I have been unsuccessfully looking for a DOANE family connection of JOSHUA DOANE who was married to a Phebe (unknown maiden name) DOANE. They both reportedly lived in Seneca County NY around 1810. Phebe moved on to the Auburn, Cayuga County NY area (without Joshua) around 1817. Please help us resolve this old riddle. This family married into my NY MONROE line. There were other Doanes in the Cayuga County area at the time who are well documented in the Doane family genealogy but I have not been able to establish any relationship to them. There is a wonderful DOANE family association that is very active and can be reached on the internet. This is a most distinguished family. While JOHN DOANE was not on the Mayflower, the family settled early in Cape Cod and married into many Mayflower families. | |
