* The Johnson Wheeler Carpenter Kendall Home Page*

Updated January 7, 2002

This is the 2002 version of a multi-family genealogy started three generations back by Louis Carpenter, then continued by my grandmother Jeannett Carpenter Wheeler, and my Mother, Harriet Wheeler Johnson.

Family highlights include two lines back to Charlemagne; a direct line to Benedict Arnold; Cornelis Barentse Slecht early Hudson farmer whose family worked with the local Indians, fought them, and married them; and his wife Tryntje, who was taken to court for calling the sheriff a bloodsucker. She admitted she had, but reminded the judge that "these are difficult times."

Most of our ancestors arrived very early on these shores by seeking religious freedom. They were Huguenots, Dutch Reformed, Baptists, Quakers, and Methodists. Countries of origin include England, Scotland, the Netherlands, Germany, France, and Norway.

One notable Huguenot was Abraham Coriell from Orleans, France and another was Mars Mareen DuVall from Nantes. I've added detailed information about the people who arrived in the 17th century, including these gentlemen as well as Cornelis Barentse Slecht, Ide Cornelissen Van Vorst, William Carpenter, Levi Igleheart, and Luke Covert. Luke was a Minute Man in the American Revolution.
