The Warnacut family has been traced back to George Washington Warnacut, who was born in Virgnia sometime prior to 1800. According to family legend, George Washington Warnacut was the some of a British soldier in the Revolutionary War. After the war, the British soldier Warnacut became acquainted with an American Corporal, by the name of David Grey. Young Warnacut decided not to return to England, but went home with Grey, and later married Corporal Grey's sister. There have been many variations of the name, which may have been Wannacott or Wonnacott in England. It is often spelled with 2 t's, as Warnicutt or Warnacutt. The Warnacut family followed the Cumberland Gap, and moved from Virginia to Tazwell, Tennessee. From there, the family moved to Kentucky. Our records document all known living persons with the Warnacut surname, located in Indiana, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Tennessee, California, and Washington State. We are most interested in trying to document the name of the original British soldier. Perhaps information from the family of David Grey may lead to some information on the marriage of his sister to the British Warnacut. |
