LAHEW, LAHU, LAHUE, LAHUGH, LAYHEW, LAYHUE, LAHUGH, LEAHEW, LEHEW, LEHU, LEHUE, LEHEUP, LEHUGH, LEYHEW, LEYHUE family lines, herein noted as "Lehew" lines and also including "Lehew" female descendency lineages! This includes many old Virginia families like Conner, Craig, Hurst, Murphey, Owens, Price, Short, Wiley, Pomeroy, Van Nort, and Skelton; just to name a few. Finally, after many years of hard work and research; I am nearing completion of huge new genealogy book which features "ALL" "Lehew" spellings entitled "LEHEW, AN ALLIED FAMILY HISTORY" complete with many hundreds of old photographs, biographies, and full family trees in a completely indexed and cross referenced printed volumes now estimated to be between 4500-5500 pages and will be offered in "whole or in the Virginia family parts" due to the it's huge size. The book will contain thousands of family members and cover Lehew direct ancestors and their family descendancy lines going back to Nicholas Lehugh and Mary (possibly nee Owens, but no proof) of Northumberland Co., VA. and their son Peter Lehew. Nicholas Lehew, a French Hugeunot; imigrated to Virginia in 1670. His son Peter Lehew was one of the founding fathers of Lehewtown, VA. (present day Front Royal, VA.)

HURRY! HURRY ! Time is fast running out as I will soon be into the 18th. year of compiling this edition. For a very short while longer, I am still accepting all types of family data and welcome any type of family data to add to my database on any of these lines. "PLEASE EXPEDITE ANY SUBMISSIONS you wish to become part of this work. When the final editing process is completed, the book will go to print". This book updates an old book compiled by James Huston LeHue and Edith Foster in the early 1960's using the earlier research of John Leslie LeHew I, M.D. which omitted a great many family lines. It corrects mistakes made on other lines. Every effort has been made to document all families. Edith Foster's original notes, photos, and information were made available to me for this venture. Also a number of other descendant genealogists have donated all of their extensive data and photo collections to include in this work. Many others are just interested relatives, who supplied whatever they could. I thank each and every one of you who has helped! Mistakes, however; will still be made and it should be expected and understood from the beginning.
This is undoubtedly one of the largest family projects ever attempted and nears the Boone family in size and scope. It is one place to tie all your bits and pieces of information together in one huge project to honor and commemorate this family line. The "Lehew" project includes all the assorted spellings of the header of this website. Most "Lehew" familes in the United States and some in Canada will be able to fit themselves into this book.
Some Lahue/Layhew families in the United States have French Canadian/Vermont roots and are not directly related to this family line or this genealogy, but I also have considerable information on their lineages, and welcome their input.
PLEASE HELP WITH THIS PROJECT! IT TAKES DEDICATED FAMILY MEMBERS TO MAKE THIS HAPPEN! PICTURES CAN ONLY COME FROM THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE THEM. THANK YOU! EVERY DAY THAT PASSES WE LOSE MORE OF THE PAST AS IT IS BURIED WITH THE PEOPLE WHO POSSESSED IT IN MEMORY ONLY.

  • William H. LeHew stoneware Pitcher, circa: 1870 (22 KB)
(SIMPLE DECORATION with scripted "L") W.H. Lehew & Co. of Strasburg, VA. manufactured beautiful salt glazed stoneware decorated with cobalt blue decoration. His stoneware ranges from plain gray unmarked items to highly decorated items, some with embossed marks. Items he made were pitchers, crocks, jars, flower pots, butter churns, and most other household items used by the 19th century families. He manufactured stoneware in Strasburg, Shenandoah County, VA. from about 1860-mid 1890's. Strasburg was also known as Pot Town, because of all the skilled potters such as W.H.Lehew, Solomon Bell, James Hickerson, James Sonner and many others. All Virginia stoneware now fetches a hefty price but pieces continue to be found in Maryland, Ohio, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Virginia and beyond. This is a late 19th century example of the artistry in W.H. LeHew stoneware made in Strasburg, VA. It is interesting to note, I have seen the script L decoration on stoneware stamped Sonner & Hickerson so perhaps they all used the same people as decorators and sometimes they forgot whose piece was being decorated.
  • Bel Air Mansion view #1 (c)1996 R D Warta (49 KB)
The Bel Air Mansion was built about 1800 by Thomas Buck on land purchased from Alan Wiley in 1798. Alan Wiley had originally purchased the land from Peter LeHew. Robert E. Lee visited Bel Air in 1863 after the Battle of Gettysburg. A LeHew, a direct descendant of Peter LeHew; Larry L. LeHew, owned and resided in Bel Air when this photo was taken in 1996. Larry LeHew bought Bel Air Mansion from S. Byrne Downing in 1973 and has restored, refurbished and added rooms to the mansion. Downing bought the mansion from the Bucks in 1905.
  • W.H. Lehew stoneware pitcher, circa: 1860 (36 KB)
(HIGHLY DECORATED with cobalt blue swags & hanging flowers) W.H. Lehew & Co. of Strasburg, VA. manufactured beautiful salt glazed stoneware decorated with cobalt blue decoration. His stoneware ranges from plain gray unmarked items to highly decorated items, some with embossed marks. Items he made were pitchers, crocks, jars, flower pots, butter churns, and most other household items used by the 19th century families. This is a late 19th century example of the artistry in W.H. LeHew stoneware made in Strasburg, VA. This decoration on Lehew's early stoneware is very similar to Solomon Bell's and also Solomon's brother John Bell who made stoneware in Pennsylvania.

LeHew Well Drilling of Front Royal, Virginia is in the forground at 139 Water Street in Front Royal, with Bel Air Mansion in the background. Both are owned by Larry L. LeHew (taken 1996) Larry LeHew bought Bel Air Mansion in 1973 and has restored, refurbished and added rooms to the mansion.
  • Small print of Bel Air Mansion circa: 1862 (108 KB)
A descendant of Thomas Buck, who built Bel Air Mansion; sent me a copy of this small colorized print which decorates an early banjo clock which once hung in the mansion and was passed down to him. This print gives a glimpse into the past of how this home first appeared. A note on the reverse says it was originally a log home in which Thomas Buck lived while the brick wings were added. This print was made from a original sketch of Bel Air as it appeared in 1862. A b & w copy of this sketch appears in "Images of America, Front Royal and Warren County", by Thomas Blumer & Charles W. Pomeroy in 2004
