Includes NotesNotes for DAN ROLAND "D.R." Sewell:
Called D.R. (He is referred to both as Dan Roland and as Daniel Roland in various writings. However, since his tombstone lists him as Dan Roland Sewell, we will use this name for the purposes of this document.)

Sewell Park in Jacksboro, Texas, was named after DAN ROLAND Sewell. The inscription on the signage reads, "This site became Jacksboro's first park after tract here on Lost Creek was donated to city on June 25, 1920 by pioneer teacher - lumberman - rancher - public benefactor Dan Roland Sewell (1872-1957). City's first waterworks were installed during Sewell's service as mayor, February 17, 1913 to April 11, 1921."

From "FROM WHENCE WE CAME", by Mary Elda Ferrel:
"In addition to farming, Dan (D.R.) taught school at Mountain Home for several years. It was a one room school, filled to overflowing, as he taught all grades from the first through the ninth. The ninth grade was at that time as far as the school took the students."

From e-mail from Daddy, 10/19/2003:
I think my maternal grandfather's name was Dan Roland Sewell -- not Daniel. (Interesting tidbit was that his will and the building named after him includes only his initials: D. R. Sewell. I don't think anyone ever called him Dan or Roland.)

Daniel Roland Sewell and Elda Ann Bryson were married in a double wedding ceremony with Doak (Elda's brother) and Mattie Simpson (according to "JACK COUNTY HISTORY") or Mattie Birdwell (according to "FROM WHENCE WE CAME"), in 1893. D.R. was 20 years old, Elda was 18. Doak was approximately 22, and Mattie's age is unknown.

* Need to confirm Mattie's last name. If it is Birdwell, she may have had some family connection Jennie Birdwell, who was Lem Bourne's (Louisa Annie's first son) sweetheart.
