From notes from Sarah Ann Quattlebaum Genzer, description of a photo of "Shady Oaks":
"Shady Oaks, located on Sterling Street and Mudd Ave. in Lafayette was built in 1848 by Charles Homere Mouton for his bride, Celemine Dupre. The architects were Paxton and Noillon.
After his death, the home was purchased by Joseph and Anna Suberbielle Burguieres. My Uncle Grover E. Mouton, son of Antoine Emile Mouton and Cora de Louiallier, married their daughter Odette Burguieres.Their sons were born there: Leufroy B. Mouton, on 7/25/1917, and Grover E. Mouton Jr., on 3/21/1919.
I remember visiting them, but the only thing I can recall is the great astonishment that I felt when I walked up the walk and entered the house without going up a stairway...you just walked straight into the entry hall into the living room!On the ground floor! It was quite a departure from the homes that I was accustomed to.It is a beautiful house."
