Per E-mail from Dan Hall; dated Tue, 23 Mar 1999
"I found that Charles Beugnot b. 12/1842 Elice, France the brother of Augustus Francis Beugnot, my direct line ancestor, served in Co. D 88th Indiana Vol. Inf. during the Civel War.Unit was out of Allen Co., In.Charles and Augustus came to USA in 1843 from France.I think there were 5 brothers total including these two.I will get the info from my mom."
May 28, 1999:Euda Lou received a packet from the Archives on Charles.
She gathered the following information from them.
Charles was 5'5 1/2" tall; had dark complexion, black eyes and black hair.
Charles entered the Army at New Haven, IN on the 2nd day of August 1862 as a Private in Co. D ii Indiana and honorable discharged June 7th 1865.
Places that he lived were:Antwerp, Paulding Co., OH; Auburn, DeKalb Co., IN; Mt. Vernon, Montgomery Co., GA; Savannah, Chatham Co., GA.
Charles was wounded in the Battle of Perrysville Kentucky on the 8 day of October 12, 1862.He was hit with a musket ball on left leg above the knee per general affidavit signed by Felix Ruso on 31 day January 1890 and witness by George W. Loagdulk and Allen lew Ciruit.Morris Rose age 47 stated the same and that he had known Charles for 30 years.They entered the Army together.Witnessed by Neithemial C. Miller, Notary Public. (spelling of these names not certain.)
Charles and Mary were united in marriage by Father Julius Brent in Danville, Essex, Ohio on November 23, 1865.
According to 1880 census of Auburn, De Kalb, IN., Charles had a wife,one servant, a daughter and three sons living at home.
In 1900 he lived in Mt. Vernon, Montgomery, GA with his wife and daughter.
According to the 1900 Census, Charles' family immigrated to the USA in 1843 when he was a baby.
Per Charles' Great Granddaughter, Theresa Hair:While serving in the Civil War on the Union side Charles was part of the Army that burned Atlanta, GA.He liked GA so much that he moved his family to Georgia after the war.
Charles settled inMt. Vernon, GA after the Civil War.Eva Teed sent Euda Lou Warren a picture of the homestead that she took in 1967 when she and Farris Beugnot visited the homestead.The general store he owned is now a historical place.Eva says it is just as it would have been back when Charles owned it.I hope one day to visit it.
In 1910 he was still in Mt. Vernon, Ga with wife, son (William E.), grandson (Charles L.).The men all worked at Post Office.Charles was Post Master, William was Delivery Mail Carrierand Charles L. was Assistant Post Master.
Charles owned a lot of property in Mt. Vernon, GA.
In the General Index to Pension Files 1861-1934 Roll #34 T-288 at the Clayton Library in Houston, Texas, copies of pension filed by Charles from the state of IN. on Dec 12, 1883 as Invalid and one from the state of GA by his wife Mary M. on Dec. 12, 1912.As of May 28, 1999, Euda Lou Warren has copies of these papers.

According to 1910 census her father was born in Germany and her mother was born in France.
Mary owned land in Mt. Vernon, Montgomery, GA according to land records.She was deeded a piece of property by D. A. McRae (et al) on July 11, 1904.
Another piece was deeded by F. F. McRae (et al) the same day.Mt. Vernon Bank held the mortgage on a piece of property she bought in Mar 12, 1906.William E. Beugnot deeded her a piece of property on June 20, 1910.Jesse Fountain deeded her part of lot 62 in Mt. Vernon on June 1, 1914 and agreed to a right to join brick wall same day.

Notes for WILLIAM E. BEUGNOT: According to 1910 census, William was single and living at home with his parents and a nephew, Charles L.He worked with his father at the post office as mail carrier.As he was 30 years old at this time, I assume he never was married. He also worked for the railroad. Don't know if this is the same William as the one I found Pension records of in the General Index to Pension Files 1861-1934 Roll #34 T-288.The file shows name as Beugnot, William E.720 Union St., Brunswick, GAR-19609. William E. owned property in Mt. Vernon, GA andsold all or some of this property to Mary M. (wife of Charles)on June 20, 1910 in Mt. Vernon, GA. Will was in Savannah, GA probably in early 1920's.Eva Teed gave Euda Lou Nichols Warren a postcard addressed to him with a Savannah address. . |
