Several years ago I began a search of relatives in Europe. My father and mother had immigrated to the U.S.A. in 1923 and both had left brothers and sisters behind. I found over 200 "Waterkamps" in Germany and a half dozen in the Netherlands. Since my mother and father had immigrated from Hengelo, Netherlands, I wrote all the Waterkamps in the Netherlands. I received one answer which turned out to be a great grandson of a brother to my father. We have been communicating ever since. I have also been putting together a complete family tree and index of my one brother and three sisters in this country. I hope to be able to locate more relatives by publishing this information on the web.
Thanks to additional information offered by Judi Van Meerten, I have added a great deal of information concerning Hendrik Waterkamp's parents and his children. Judi is the daughter of Carl and Tena Berghorst.Carl was the son of Johanna Waterkamp Berghorst, my father's sister.
For those who might be interested, information concerning my father and mother's arrival in the U.S.A. can be located at http://www.ellisislandrecords.org. There, you will find a copy of the ships manifest. The ship was the "Nieuw Amsterdam". It departed Rotterdam, Province of South Holland, The Netherlands and arrived at the Port of New York on April 22, 1923. Listed on the manifest were, Hendrik Waterkamp, age 35, Tiele Waterkamp, age 31, Oukje B. Waterkamp, age 7 and Hendrika G. Waterkamp, age 3. They had to declare any amount of money in their possession over $50. They declared $135.00. Their sponsor was J. H. Roerink, R#6, Holland, Michigan.
