* LAMBERTH / GILBERT / HARVILL / MATTHEWS from CLARKE CO., AL*

Updated June 30, 2001

My great-great grandfather was John Rufus LAMBERTH/LAMBERT from Clarke CO., AL. He married Caroline GILBERT daughter of Daniel and Elizabeth Burton GILBERT. I have them first on the 1840 census through 1880. I cannot find John prior to 1840 or after 1880.His father, John LAMBERT(H)Sr. is on the 1816 tax rolls of Clarke Co.

John Sr. was born 1796 England. He was in the United States by 1811. He married a "lady from Coffeeville" ca 1815. Daniel GILBERT married 2nd., Matilda GILCREAST/GILCHRIST.

John and Caroline's children were: A. J. (m) Mary Frances HARPER; William M. (m) Jerusia HAWK; Rufus (m) Lavenia SKIPPER; John James (m) Jane BENSON; Ann Aurulia (m) Henry Hillard COX; Daniel Lee (my g-grandfather)(m)Mary Mollie HARVILL; Pembrook S. (m) 1st Alice SMITH, 2nd Ellen PAYNE Bishop, and lastly Mary Elizabeth (m) W. A. MCCORQUODALE. I have the children and grandchildren of some of the above mentioned people. Possibly John LAMBERTH had at least two sisters one married a CALHOUN the other a John BUMPERS.

John LAMBERTH (Jr.) is on Clarke Co. census with his wife and children from 1840 until 1880 then he vanishes. His wife, Caroline, died in 1910. She and several of the children are buried in River Hill Cemetery, Clarke Co., AL.

Wilson HARVILL,(HARWELL, HARVEL, HARVILLE) born Clarke CO., AL. He also lived in LA.,and MS., Wilson is my other great-great grandfather. His father was Ninnion HARVILL, mother Elizabeth (WILSON?) Wilson was first married 1850 to Mary CRAVEY, daughter of Ludwig CRAVEY. Their children: Lorenzo, Columbus, William, John, Margaret, and Martha. Mary CRAVEY died 1861.

Wilson married second Darcas MATTHEWS (my g-g-grandmother) Oct. 1861. Their children: Calvin, Fannie, (b. AL) Mary Mollie (b. LA & my great-grandmother)and lastly, Sarah Rachel,(b. Shubuta,MS.)

Darcas' parents were Calvin and Sarah MATTHEWS from North Carolina, Dale County, AL. then Coffeeville, AL. Other children of Sarah and Calvin were: Lucy; Smythia(m)John Calvin OLIVER; Sarah(m) Elias S. JONES; and Calvin Jr. who married Martha E. MCCORQUODALE Robinson. Formally Martha was married to Obediah Smith ROBINSON. Obediah and Martha had 2 sons,Thomas J., and John S.

Calvin and Martha had 4 daughters, Sarah A., Minnie Alma, Pearlie and Lela. Sarah married D. J. THOMPSON; Minnie married Walter DEAS; Pearl married Bettis BEVERLY.

Wilson was a private in CO. G, 32nd Regiment of the Alabama Volunteers in the Civil War. He deserted. Darcas applied for his pension in Jan 1899. She stated she did not know when or where he died, the last time she saw him he was heading west on his crutches.

Darcas, Mollie, and Rachel are together on the 1880 Clarke CO., AL census. In 1880 Wilson, William, John, Columbus (Lum), Margaret, Calvin and Calvin's wife, Eliza, are on the Quitman County, MS census in the same household. In the next household is Lorenzo(Ren),wife Mary and son Albert with a little girl, Lillie R. Ray. In 1900 John Harvill and brother Lorenzo are on the Sevier County, AR census.

Daniel Lee and Mary Mollie HARVILL (called Mollie) LAMBERTH had the following children: Edward F., Maude, Kheva (Key-va)(my grandmother), George, and Pugh. Pugh was born in Clarksville, AL., the rest in Salitpa. According to the Meridian, MS census, Daniel, Mollie, and children were there in 1900 and 1910.
In 1912 they were in Sherman, TX., 1920 in Ardmore, OK., and finally Wichita Falls, TX.

I have quite a bit of history on some these people that I will gladly share.

Thanks,
Janice
