Adam Roop Weidman (b. November 25, 1835, d. August 05, 1919)
Notes for Adam Roop Weidman:
According to the 1860 census Adamwas a blacksmith living in Huntington County Pa. and he and Catharine Cole had three children:Eliphas, Sarah, and Barbara.
Adam was a soldier during the Civil War and saw a lot of hard service. Leaving his wife and four children behind, the baby only three months old (John Henry) he joined for duty on Aug. 7, 1862 at Lewistown. His service was for nine months paid bounty of $ 25.00. He mustered in August 12, 1862, and went on to Harrisburg on August 19, 1862. On the "muster roll" he was a private assigned to Capt. McManigal's company of the 131st Regiment of the Pennsylvania Infantry. This unit later became Company D.
He was present on the muster roll from Aug to Oct, 1862, he was in a Division Hospital until Nov. 15, 1862 when he was promoted to Corporal. On the Jan. and Feb. roll and a special Company roll in April he was present. The "Company muster out roll " has him present on May 23, 1863He was last paid on Feb. 28, 1863 and was paid $45.84.
There is a Veteran's marker at Adam's grave sight. GAR VETERAN 1861-1865. He also has the Company noted on the stone. The war records indicate that this company fought in the battles of Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville, Virginia.
For many years, Adam was engaged in the blacksmith trade and followed this vocation in Belleville, Pa. where he had a large and appreciative line of customers. He did good work, was honest in his dealings, and was very trustworthy. For almost 25 years, he was the village and township constable, not by his own choosing, but by unanimous choice of the people, seldom if ever having any opposition, and all political parties were willing to accept him as a capable and efficient official. In later years, as the strength of the body began to fail and it was no longer possible for him to continue in his trade, he served the School board as Janitor of the Public Schools and also as Sexton of the Presbyterian Church. The children of the town were his friends, he had no enemies.
Even though Adam was a corporal in the war, he later gained the nickname "cap" short for captain.Probably no man was more popular with the boys in Belleville than "Cap".He took a great interest in them, and for several years had companies of boys which he dirllled in military tactics. He was really proud of his boys of company "A" and they of him-the even marched in parades.
Granddaughter Maude Pennypacker Ehrenfeld, in a 1972 letter, remembered the following about her grandfather Adam.
"He was cradling wheat during the war and was taken from the field to fight the are.Grandmother never saw him until he came back from the war.Mother and all were born in Belleville, Pa. The place is still standing where William Eliphas Weidman lived in Milroy, Pa. You might like this: when grandfather came home he gathered a bunch of young boys, six or seven years old, and once a week he took those boys to the school ground on the hill at Belleville and trained them just like soldiers. Later they got guns and uniforms and were in many parades at many places and he was known as Captain Weidman. They had drums and played taps.It was so nice to see them march, and if they out of step, he sure told them when.Myrt (Myrtle Bell Weidman Roberts Maudes's cousin)and I would go up to see them. He'd call a meeting so we could see them practice."
Adam died at the home of daughter Mrs. Harry (Laura)Bennett, and his funeral services were held there, and at the Lutheran Church. He died at the age of 83 and Catharine died, less than three months later, at age 82.It seemed that for her to give up the home after Adam died was more than she could bear. They had a marriage of 63 years.Catharine was cheerful at all times and was loved by all who knew her.she was truly a good woman and delighted in administering to the needs and wants of others. She visited the sick, sympathized with the troubled, and was charitable to all. Her whole life was an example.
At the time of their death they had 7 surviving children, 39 grandchildren, 58 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. He was a member of the Lieutenant Gilbert Beaver Post, a Veterans organization in Belleville.Adam and Catharine were members of the Lutheran Church in Belleville and are buried in the church cemetery. Adam, Catharine, and their first born, William Eliphas Weidman all died between 1918-1919.
Notes above are a combination of obituary notes and Maude's letter.
