Notes for Mary Ann Edwards: Mary Ann Edwards was born 02 March 1839 and was Christened at St. Michael-le-Belfry, York, England on 06 March 1839. She married Henry Ferris Norman at St.Peter's Anglican Church, Willis Street, Wellington on 31 July 1858 when she was aged 19 years and he a 25 year old grazier. The marriage was witnessed by her two brothers, William and John. Henry came to Wanaka as the manager of Roy's Station for a Wellington firm of squatters in February 1859.I am not certain whether or not Mary Ann travelled with him at this stage, as it seems possible he may have returned to Wellington until the birth of their son,Richard Robert, returning to Wanaka in June 1860. Her Obituary. Many friends and acquaintances regret the death of Mrs McKinlay ( nee Mrs Henry Norman ) of Albert Town - Friday last. She had been ill over 18 months. She was a link between the early pioneers and goldfields civilisation. Mrs Norman accompanied her first husband to Wanaka in the latter end of 1860, being in fact the first white woman in that fair region, and to her was born the first European child in the district ( Robert Henry ). The eldest child, Richard, was a baby in arms when the father brought the first mob of sheep into Wanaka via Lindis Pass in 1860 - no semblance of a road. In the late 1863, Mr Norman opened the Albert Town Hotel, where Mrs Norman (McKinlay) resided till January last. She was highly thought of, for her kindly disposition and willingness to help others in sickness or distress. The family are all grown up and living in the district.
