"John Bierly"
Linn's history gives the following biographical sketch of John Bierly the second son of Anthony Bierly I . This is an excerpt from "The Bierly Family" byHelen Glossner Shuman.
"Bierly, John, second son of Anthony Bierly, Sr., was born Feb. 8, 1779, in Northumberland County and was about twelve years old when his father came to the valley (Brush Valley). His mother used to relate to him how she secreted him , when but a few months old, in a sugar-trough in the woods, and fled with the rest of the children while the Indians made an attack on the settlement. The Indians did not discover him, and he was found uninjured on the return of the family when the danger was over. Mr. Bierly was married to Mary Catherine Berry, of Lancaster, daughter of Fred Berry, born Jan. 5, 1784 and died September. 18, 1861, and lived near Rebersburg about forty-five years, then moved to Sugar Valley, near Tylersville where he died in l870, aged ninety-one. Most of the children are residents of Sugar Valley. Peter S., one of the sons, lived on the old homestead near Rebersburg, Pa. Hon. Willis R. (Reed) Bierly, now a member of the Legislature from Lycoming County is a son of Peter s. and grandson of John Bierly." "Elsewhere in Linn's history, John is listed among the inhabitants of Miles Township in 1801, and among the list of interments of early settlers buried in the Lutheran and Reformed Church Cemetery at Tylersville, Linn names John and his wife, thusly:" "John Bierly, died Aug. 27, 1870, aged 92; his wife, Mary C., died Sept. 18, 1861, aged 80." "Below this writer lists the following children of John and Mary C. Bierly: 1 Christina, married Thomas Bickel, no further data 2 Michael Berry, born May 10, 1814, married Sarah Emerick 3 Catherine, Born Jan. 1, 1809, married Jocob Spangler 4 William, died single 5 Elizabeth married first Mr. Fraser; second, Oswald Dubbs 6 +++ Jacob C., born 1812, died July 5, 1862, married Mary Magdalene Ruhl 7 Henry, married Sarah Hoy, moved to North Dakota 8 Mary, married Emmanuel Grimes, tailor and confectioner 9 Peter S., married Mary Ann Reed 10 Samuel, born 1833, died July 18, 1906, married Mary DeGarmo, who died Oct. 8, 1888, aged 58years, 11 months, 7 days. Both are interred in Tylersville Lutheran Cemetery. 11. John. (Hairy John), married Frances Spangler The son we are most interest in is listed 6th, Jacob C. Bierly, father of our great grandfather, Benjamin Michael Bierly who married Anna Mae Beck.
