Boydstun family researchers have attributed two marriages t
o Davi d Boydstun: 1. Mahala or Mehitable Snow (usually md
. about 1736 - 1737) (DAR Patriot Index lists David's wif
e as Mehitable Snow).
Their children: Sabra, Cynthia, Unknown, Malinda, George b
. abt 1737; James b. abt 1738; David, b a bt 1740, Nancy b
. abt 1745. (One researcher, WFT Vol. 13, #344, adds Mahuld
a b. 1747 as the 8th child).
2. Sarah Pruitt, daughter of Samuel Pruitt and E lizabeth H
awker (see his son, James Boydstun Sr. -- did he marry hi
s own au nt or am I impossibly confused? One cousin points o
ut that James Sr. would NO T in this case have married his o
wn aunt...she would have been his step-aunt! )
Their children: Priscilla, Jesse, Lesina, William b. 1753
, Catherine b ab t 1775
Other researchers reverse the marriages.
I have entered the DAR marria ge to Mehitable Snow, althoug
h I have also entered a 2nd marriage to Sarah Pr uitt, eve
n though the DAR does not list this marriage. I have attrib
uted th e children born to David Boydstun to the marriage t
o Mehitable Snow, as DAR l ists her death in 1811 in Harwick
, Massachusetts, and this would accommodate all the childre
n. I do this to try and include the research on later gener
a tions done by myself and others. Some may say this is no
t a correct lineage, and they are probably right, but unti
l I am able to do the research myself, i t will have to do
. My apologies to Mrs. Weaver and Mrs. Domonoske!
The DAR l ineage also included sons Benjamin and Thomas, no
t listed on several other li sts, including that of Mrs. Dom
onoske.
Another researcher mentions only one marriage to Mahala Sno
w and the line is limited to this individual's direct l in
e down from David. This same researcher has the following B
oydstun line b ack to the year 1460:
Generation 1. Adam Beiston b. 1460 md. ...Cuthbert Gener ati

According to records found by Mrs. Gladys Domonoske in Powe
ll Val ley, Tennessee, the charter petition for the Davis Cr
eek Baptist Church there dated 1 Oct 1797 has the name of S
arah Boydstun. Charter members, according to Mrs. Domonoske
, give clues for the children of David and Sarah, includin
g the possibility of Catherine Boydstun and Priscilla Box
. Other sons may ha ve been John, Robert, and Thomas Boydst
un in the 1810 census records of Logan County, Kentucky.
There was also a land grant of 640 acres granted to Jesse B
oydston in 1783 in Davidson County, Tennessee. This Jesse w
as a revolutiona ry soldier of Virginia, serving in the 1s
t Virginia State Regiment.
Children attributed to Sarah Pruitt by some researchers are:
William b. 24 Mar 1853 Je sse, said to be a Revolutionary Pa
triot of Montgomery Co, VA Lesina Priscilla , who md. John B
ox Catherine b. 1775 who married James Stewart Warren.
Shirl ey Nobles Erickson (shirley@htcomp.net) lists only Wil

EHITABLE SNOW:

LDS Ancestral Files dated 28 Nov 1997 sent to me by Richar
d Jenni ngs of Austin, Texas show that David Boydstun/Boylst
on/Boyleston married Maha la Snow b. abt 1714 in Somerset, M
D, died abt 1751 Barren County, KY. Her par ents, accordin
g to this record, are John Snow (b abt 1684) and Elizabet
h Hu dson (b. 1671).
World Family Tree Vol. 13, Pedigree #3039 states that Davi
d married Mehitable Snow 1 Jun 1746 in Taunton, MA, daughte
r of Deacon Snow and Elizabeth Payne.
The letter of Benjamin Franklin Boydstun of Rockwall, Texas
, dated 10 Jan 1869 (published in part in Gladys Domonoske'
s book on the fam ily, p. 12) states that David's first wif
e was Mahala Snow. She also cites th e Bible record of Samue
l Boydstun of Perry County, Alabama, which names the w ife M
ahala Snow.
Cindy Owens (cindyo@va.prestige.net) sends this extract tak
en from town records and published in New England Historica
l & Genealogical Register, Vol. 102, page 201:
Mehitable Snow, daughter of Jabez, married 8/2 3/175
3 to Samuel Hopkins.
He was born 30 Aug 1724, died bef 29 Jun 1813
Meh itable married 2ndly 1766 to Reuben Ryder,
Mehitable married 3rdly 1775 to Dea con Paul Crowell. T
his pretty much rules out this Mehitable Snow being our an c
estress.
Following is an excellent discussion on the Mayflower linea
ge by Lynette Kurcina, edited for space reasons:
MAHALA/MEHALA SNOW BORN ABOUT 1714 -18; DIED ABOUT 1750-52
Our family history has been passed down verbally. We c an ve
rify some of it with written records. Other parts we have t
ried to fig ure out from what was said. I am looking primari
ly at the verbal account of o ur history. I am giving you m
y thoughts on our lineage based on what has been said in bo
oks and to me by my anscestors. In that tradition I will te
ll yo u what I remember and how I see our lineage.
When I started researching the Bo ydston tree there was no d
oubt in my mind, the Boydston tree would be difficu lt and c
omplicated. There have been moments of great joy and grea
t sorrow. The joy was seeing the truth, the sorrow was ho
w difficult it has been for so many people to preserve it
. Some people have the opinion that a record must be foun
d to prove a lineage. That doesn't make sense to me havin
g studied s ociology. I would like to preserve our history e
xactly as it was, to pursue t he truth, and to preserve ou
r traditions. The way I've approached my research is to ass
ume everything I was told about our lineage was true an
d I found it to be so.
My grandmother's father Charley Boaz Burris Boydston, who d
ied in 1909 from a falling tree, told my grandmother storie
s that were passed dow n to me. I remember stories about Ste
phen and Constance Hopkins and David Boy dston Jr. I remembe
r the stories about Constance coming on the Mayflower, Ste p
hen Hopkins friendship with Myles Standish and stories abou
t David and Geo rge Boydston fighting the American Revolutio
n. The stories and traditions tha t were passed down to me a
re the corner stone of my happiness today. Grandmot her sai
d to me on many occasions that we were the descendants of C
onstance Hopkins who came on the Mayflower. My favorite sto
ries were of the Mayflower.
Late in my grandmothers life she decided to join the Mayflo
wer Society in N ebraska. When she found out that our lineag
e was innaccurate she agonized ove r it. She and her sister
s took many trips to Pennsylvania where she looked fo r ou
r early roots. I can clearly say to you that my grandmothe
r made the de cision to pass down the Mayflower lineage afte
r much thought. She told me she believed what her father ha
d told her. My mother also stated the information that we a
re descendants of Stephen and Constance Hopkins was passe
d down t o her and she believed it to be true. Grandma sai
d to me and said in the lett ers "Surely someday we'll be ab
le to prove this." When I received her researc h it was hear
t warming to remember her honesty
