9. WILLIAM⁴ HOWARD (RICHARD³, EDWARD², EDWARD¹) was born February 18, 1789 in Dover, Dutchess, New York, and died May 22, 1877 in Hamburg, Michigan. He married DEBORAH DUNCAN 1815. She was born March 09, 1796 in Dutchess Co, New York, and died January 16, 1872.

10. JAMES⁴ HOWARD (THOMAS³, EDWARD², EDWARD¹) was born September 02, 1804 in Pawling, Dutchess Co, New York, and died October 29, 1890 in Lagrange. He married ANN DODGE October 24, 1827. She was born August 24, 1806 in Pawling, Dutchess Co, New York, and died June 14, 1866.

11. JOHN P.⁴ HOWARD (WILLIAM³, EDWARD², EDWARD¹) was born Abt. 1815 in Troy, New York, and died 1863 in Alabama. He married MARY LOUISE BLOUNT. She was born Abt. 1826 in South Carolina.

William Howard is believed to immigrated from England and settled in New York. He is the father of John P. Howard. Lineage provided in Family Tree of bible owned by Bessie E. Howard, wife of Robert Lafayette Howard. The middle name of John P. Howard, is believed to be " Peter". The John P Howard Inheritance, is a oral history passed to his descendents and has been a matter of intrigue and mystery for generations. The attached letter should shed some light as to what has been passed down

Mrs. Miriam Howard, Dear Cousin Thanks for your nice letter, and the $2.00.

Fates part of the fee is $14.00, so I did"t know how many heirs he had, and just told Mable and Doris to divide that by number of his children, so presume that is right as that is what they paid. I've gotten all their facts except Ruby. I plan to send it off to Tracers Monday. The Lavenders are not paying, I presume1 as they have ignored my letters, but I've gone this far and George and I are going to pay their part and also Ruby's. I'll tell you what I know about it. I was brought up on it, as my father and Aunt Sallie talked a lot of it.
Their father was John P. Howard, and lived until his teens in NY City. His father was William Howard and his mother was Euphrasia. He got tired of being carried everywhere by a servant, so he left home in his early teens and never went back. He worked on a boat awhile. then made his way to St. Louis, and worked his way through school. Later going to Alabama, where he met and married Mary Louise Blount. He taught school, worked ii) a gin between schools, then ran for sheriff of Lowndes County~ I think it was, and was elected and served two terms. He lost and arm, probably in the gin. He was a very reserved man. My father often said "He was a man of a few words." His dad, William Howard, finally located him in Alabama and wrote him to come home, that all was forgiven, and sent him $700. But he bought a little farm with that. Quite a few letters were past between them, and he kept them that he received in his desk.
In 1863 a bad measles epidemic came and he got sick and died. He told Grandma on his death bed, that he had a big inheritance left him by his father(in Chancery) and for her to get Mr. Smith, I presume a neighbor, to get a good lawyer and get it for herself, and the children. That everything that she would need to prove their ownership to estate was in his desk. But Uncle John, being the oldest, didn't even read the letters and destroyed most of them. A cousin of my mother's, who loved keepsakes, took some of them, and still had them when he died. They fell into the hands of his (the cousin) grand-daughter, who was keeping them. I got in touch with her mother and the girl was overseas. Well we didn't get the letters. Aunt Sallie fell heir to the family Bible, which had all the names in it, but she never let any of us see it. Now the records are torn out, and her children and husband claim they don't know what became of them.

A few years ago, I started a search. I just wrote N.Y.City for the names of the counties that make up NY City. They sent me the five names of counties. I wrote to the county seat inclosing a stamped envelope for reply. Each one said they didn't~t know of any inheritance left by any Howards. So I wrote the mayor and he told me that any money left in Chancery would be in Albany, N.Y. I wrote the authorities in Albany, and they told me that they had an inheritance left in Chancery from William Howard to a son John Howard, but that it had been transferred to the Bowing Savings Bank in N.Y.City. I wrote them and they said, yes we have an inheritance left from William Howard to a son John Howard. They said that the names that I submitted matched the names they had but that the dates did not, and said you will have to submit more proof,as it is a large estate and we can't turn it loose till we have more proof. Well, I scratched for more proof, but it still may not be enough.
Tracers of America are highly recommended to me and they have

access to all records. After some correspondence went thru, they said they would take the job for a retaining fee of $350.00, and that's why I asked the help of all his heirs. I truly think we will get it, if time hasn't run out on us. I've told them all that it's a gamble, but we may win and it's a little for each one to pay.

We are going to send off the money, Monday and we are going to make up what is lacking on it. I have names and Addresses of all the heirs, except one. My uncle Jack's son. Have been trying to locate him but so far have failed to find him. Some of the heirs sent their checks to Tracers and I couldn't deposit those, so I sent those on to Tracers $62.05 and explained it to them. They wrote me they had set up the investigation. So he~he's hoping.

Howard & this stood for "John Peter Howard." Her mind is good, so I know she knows what she is saying even tho she is 81 yrs old

John P. Howard was born in New York. Information has been presented as fact that he run away from home at age of 15,and went to sea. He settled in Selma Alabama where his occupation as stated as an educator. What is meant by educator is unknown. None of this information has been verified, only told in stories by descendents.

John D. Howard was a private in Company "C" 17th Ala Regiment. The Company was organized on 14 Sep 1861. John was listed on the roster when the Company was marched to the front on 25 Sep 1861.

Note: Information written in ink on the reverse side of death certificate indicates John D Howard moved to Selma Alabama in 1865, then moved to Starksville Miss in 1870. Information indicates John D was buried in Starksville Miss

Relatives refer to Martha as "Aunt Martha" when all records indicate she became his wife after the death of Malissa Ann Scallons in, Manalo (Rockdale) Texas in 1886.
