Jack Lavender, husband of Mittie F Howard was a traveling merchant. The wagon contained his merchandise, cloth, buttons, needles, pots, lye soap, etc. The hay on top of the weagon was used to feed the mules as he would be out for days at a time. The ladies in the picture are unknown but must be customers. He was a welcome sight as the farm ladies were not able to obtain these items without much effort. Maybe, Jack Lavender is the source of all the old jokes of the "Traveling saleman and the Farmers Daughter"
