1. WILLIAM DOUGLAS4 WEBB (JACOB WEBB3 2, WILLIAM WEBB2 1, JACOB WEBB1) was born 1813 in Northampton or Newport, New Jersey, and died January 1896 in Hamilton, Alabama (or Hodges). He married LOUISA H. BOYD August 02, 1842 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, daughter of ?ROBERT BOYD and ?TEMPERANCE PITTMAN.

Notes for W
ILLIAM DOUGLAS WEBB:
William Douglas Webb was born (possibly) in Newport, New Jersey, between 1815 and 1821. He had a "bad mean mother" who might have been Indian or part Indian. Family tradition has it that she actually cursed at William Douglas' father for praying. His mother was a "Pepper" possibly named Sarah.

William Dougas may also have been born in Northampton, New Jersey. The town changed its name to Mount Holly in the late 1700's.

At the age of 16, William Douglas supposedly ran away to work on boats that ran up and down the east coast. Albert Jr. said that he was on the boat for numerous years, then got off the boat in Mobile, Alabama, and came up to Tuscaloosa County, and got married to Louisa Boyd Aug. 2, 1842.

For years, the Webb family in New Jersey thought William Douglas was dead, but after he moved to Marion County, Alabama, in 1878, he had his son Melvin write" a letter of enquirment" back to the "old post office" and reached an "old maid sister". She wrote back to him asking if he remembered the cow getting into the hornet's nest. She told him his father "had raised up a whole new family." She also told him his brothers - he supposedly had around four brothers -- "went West."

Albert Jr. describes William Douglas Webb as "a humble person, walked very, very straight. He had real straight black hair, as straight as a stick - they say my daddy had hair as straight as William's." Albert Jr. also says that William Douglas liked to ice skate, a sport almost unknown in Alabama. William Douglas taught his children how to ice skate, something he had probably learned while growing up in New Jersey.

When William was older, he went blind because of growths over his eyes. The blindness lasted for approximately one year. The family story is that the growths were "burned off." One night, while he was sitting by the fire, he could suddenly see his wife.

NOTE: WILLIAM'S PARENTAGE IS NOT YET PROVEN.

Notes for L
OUISA H. BOYD:
A note attached to some family tree work done by Webb cousins in Missouri says that Louisa H. Boyd was 17 when she married William Douglas Webb, which would have made her birthdate 1825, although one of my notes says she was born in 1823.

Louisa's family is said to be from North Carolina.

She is listed on the notes from the Missouri Webb cousin as being buried at Old Lebanon Cemetary, Hamilton.

Marriage Notes for W
ILLIAM WEBB and LOUISA BOYD:
Louisa Boyd might have been of Irish extraction. According to Albert Webb, Jr., she had red hair.

She and William Douglas were married by Alexander Kyle, JP. Page 219 of "Alabama Vital Records - Marriages" 976.184 v25g, book dated Jan. 2, 1837-Feb. 9, 1843.

In 1850 Fed Census, dated October, William's middle initial looked like a "B". He gave his age as 29 (which would have made him born in 1821), although other family info says he was born in 1818. Info is on page 296 of the 1850 census, line 31-36. William gives his birthplace as New Jersey.

These are the children living at home during the census: Robert A., 6 years old; Margarette, 4 years old; Lindsey, 3 years old; James D., 2 months old. Have not so far (as of 9/1/98) found any information on James and Margarette, they might not have survived.
