John Baker of E. Greenwich, son of Benjamin, North Kingstown, and Lillis Bowen, of East Greenwich, of Daniel of Swansey, MA.Beekman Patent
John Baker (Thomas3-2-1) was b ca. 1720 and was taxed inBeekman from 1745 to June 1748.There is no proof that firmly establishes him as son of Thomas3 but he seems to have lived in Beekman and shared farms there with Thomas Baker.
He was probably the man who m. Elizabeth Adams, 15 Oct. 1743 at FRCh.A John Baker was taxed in the Southern Precinct Feb. 1755 - June 1759 and also 1766-67.
John Baker was noted in a road description in Rombout 6 April 1747.He was residing near the boundary between Rombout and Beekman in the vicinity of present day Freedom Rd. in LaGrange.
John Baker was taxed in Beekman "on Thomas Baker" 1774-1778.In 1790 a John Baker was listed in Beekman as 3-0-2 and was next to John Davis and Reuben Baker, Morris Baker, Japhet and Benjamin Davis and Beekman Sabins were next on the list.
John Baker had a son fighting for the enemy in 1780 and was fined #11/3. His property was assessed at #300.This was probably his son Solomon although it appears that a son John, not mentioned in the will was also a Loyalist."John Baker, NY. Imprisoned three months during the war:lost a cow in 1776, a mare and colt in 1777.Oct. 1783 gave his claim to Gilbert Totten, then agent for Westchester Loyalists, to forward to London."
The above may pertain to the Beekman John Baker. (AML 21 and see SBP 1: 547)
Benjamin Darbyshire posted bond for John Baker 29 May 1781.They both put up #300.The condition was: "If John Baker shall depart from Poughkeepsie in the said County of Dutchess and repair to his dwelling House in said Beekman Precinct and on his arrival there shall not depart more than three miles from said dwelling House until the further order of the above named Commissioners appointed for the like purpose." (AD 10201)
Neither son (Solomon nor John) of John Baker was mentioned in his will dated 17 Oct. 1799 at Fishkill and recorded 13 March 1800.He mentioned his sons Reuben, Samuel, Jesse, and daus. named below.
Also mentioned was grandson, Ely White.He named executors "my son Joseph Wright", true and trusty friend Abraham I. Brinkerhoff.Witnesses were Robert Seaman and Valentine Willson. (DCW B: 211)

| Notes for SOLOMON BAKER: Beekman Patent, pages 312-316 Solomon Baker, (John 4, Thomas3-2-1) was probably born ca 1750 and was an important Loyalist in Beekman.He was sentenced to be hanged in 1781. He may have m. Delana Ferguson (Folkenson), although we have included the man above as son of Jesse Baker, and he probably belongs there. There are 4 pages of trial documents, which I will not include here. The author does not seem to know whether Solomon is a son of John or of Jesse.There are numerous notes, but no conclusions. "Before the Needle" by Hearn, page 22 "On 21 May 1781, Solomon Baker, white, British spy, was hanged at Poughkeepsie." |

Notes for MARY SHERMAN:
Mary Sherman was the only child of Josiah Sherman and Mary Potter.Mary Potter Sherman died in childbirth, Josiah died abt 2 years later, and Mary was raised by her uncle Joseph Potter.

Mary moved to New York State with her son John, after the death of Benjamin, in the Revolutionary War. (1778-1780)
