"The Clarke Family of Rhode Island" page 24 "He must have removed from Newport to Westerly early in life for in 1669 he became the Town Clerk of Westerly, retaining the position until 1700. In July 1675, he and his family went to Newport for fear of the Indian War then raging and remained in the home of Rev. Samuel Hubbard until the war closed." page 25, His will was dated 5 Oct 1725, was proved at Westerly 1727, February 27. (Vol. II, p 107 of Town Council and Probate records) He gave to daughter Mary Champlin a bed, bedding, etc and #5; to daughter Judith Maxson, #5; to daughter Susanna Babcock, #5; to daughter Bethiah Hiscox, 1 shilling; states that his sons Joseph and John, deceased, had already received their share of his estate; gives to his two grandsons, viz; Joseph Clarke's eldest son and Joshua Clarke's eldest son, 12d apiece; to sons of Thomas, William and Samuel, a shilling each, they having had their portions. Names Samuel as executor.
