Digging Up Bones:

I just returned from a trip to Vernon, Texas and Frederick, Oklahoma. I spent most of my time in the courthouses of Tillman and Wilbarger counties. I spent some time in all the cemeteries that we have family buried in. I have pictures of all the head stones that I am aware of in those areas. I found several important documents and will share in the next newsletter. A few have sent information and that is the bulk of this newsletter. I hope that with additional participation we will have enough new news or old news to be interesting.

Opal Rachel Hill –Eighth child born to Henry Augustus Hill and Martha Jane Thigpen Hill. She was born in Emblem, TX--Oct. 4, l904. After graduating from High School she attended a secretarial school in Vernon, TX. She excelled in stenography and typing and worked as a personal secretary-stenographer for a judge in Vernon. She resigned her position there when her sister, Mattie, became ill and needed someone to take care of her. After that, I'm not sure what other positions she held.

On December 20, l925, she married James Marvin Rogers, a farmer. Their first home was in Hale Center, TX. My sister Wilma Jean Rogers was born on June 28, l928 in Silverton, TX After a time they bought a farm in Sudan, TX where I was born on August 30, 1932 Mothers sister, Myrtle and her brothers, Parmer and Jack had farms in Sudan also.

In l936, we moved to Shafter, CA where my father worked for a rancher, Wood Stone. My sister and I attended Maple School there until we moved to Pond, CA where my father still worked for Wood Stone driving a tractor. There, Jean and I attended Pondham School. It was during the time in Shafter that Irene Hill and later Mattie and Tommy Mayo and family staying with us until they found work and a place to live.

At some point, we moved back to Shafter where my father went to night school learning the welding trade. He was aware that, due to the war, welders were needed in the shipyards in Stockton, Ca. He moved to
Stockton in l943 to work in the shipyards and we followed after completing our school year. They purchased five and a half acres of
land on South "B" St. where they built a home for my grandparents.

Around 1944, they bought a home at 1849 Palm Ave. where their third daughter Susan Nannette was born on Oct. 9, 1946. Around l952, while my father was commuting to Sacramento where he worked at Perkins Welding Works, they sold their home on Palm Ave and moved north of town where
they lived until around 1955 when they moved to Sacramento along with my sister Susan. They lived there until my father retired in 1969. After that, home was on their "ranch" at 2929 South "B" St.. until their death. My father died in. March 1991 and Mother on June 11, l991. They are buried at the Happy Homestead Cemetery, South Lake Tahoe, CA where Susan lives.

Both are buried at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Lawton.

Derinda Hill Moerer –Derinda is the great great granddaughter of Henry Augustus Hill through Carter Lee Hill and Hershell Hill.

We've just moved to Vancouver, Wash. for me to work at the Northwest Baptist Witness, our So. Baptist monthly newspaper that covers Ore., Wash., and panhandle of
Idaho. I started in February and we just got all of our stuff moved into a house this past weekend. (Still moving boxes from one room to another and looking for the VCR!) Rod is doing interim pastor work, currently
serving in East Wenatchee, Wash. at Eastmont Baptist Church. We are about seven hours closer to our kids in California. I've included the article that was published about my joining the staff which covers
everything.

Speaking of kids, our third son, Clint and his wife Natalie and two young boys left for Southeast Asia Dec. 27. They are serving as missionaries with So. Baptist in what is called International Service Corps, a two-year program. His job consists of playing
basketball with the young men who hang out at the city courts. What a job! They served in China for six weeks several years back and have a real heart for the people in that part of the world.

Thanks for the Information Received:

I want to thank Derinda Moerer, Betty Lord, and Gary Stinnett for the information that makes up most of the newsletter for this quarter. This is exactly what I have been asking for. If you enjoy this type of information please email or send it to me so that I can put it into the newsletter. This had been my last planned letter on the Hill family. Since I have received this information I am going to extend the newsletter for another edition. I will continue as long as I have something to print. I want you to think of the value of this kind of information 100 years from now. It will be priceless. It would be a shame for the Hill name to become so obscure that no one could find any information. Please consider sending any thing that would interest the family. If I receive more than I can print on approximately 4 pages I will save for the next edition. Thanks, Jerry

New Information I have found :

Orlando Riley Hill was the first child born to Henry A. and Martha Thigpen Hill.

The 1910 Tillman County, Oklahoma census lists Orlando R. Hill age 23, Wife Maude B., age 25 and step-daughter, Opal O. Byrd age 5.

I received this information from Paul Grose. Paul is a researcher in Oklahoma that answered an email query I put on the Internet. It is as follows:

Surname: HILL

Jerry,

My listing of the burials in the Frederick Memorial Cemetery shows an Orlando R. Hill with a burial date of 12/06/1918. Plot Number 01-F-015-03. There is nothing listed for Maude. Hope this helps, Paul.

This information finds all of the children of Henry Augustus Hill and where they are buried.

I went to Frederick, OK on May 6, 2001 and found the grave of Orlando Riley Hill. To his left was a Maude B. Givens. This was Maude B. Hill. I have a copy of the marriage license. Orlando and Maude were married on March 17, 1910. She was listed as Maude Bird. This was her second marriage. She later married J. L. Givens of Tipton, OK. on March 24, 1924. I do not know if Orlando and her had any children. Oh Well!! Another challenge to solve!!.

Carter Lee Hill was the second child born to Henry A. and Martha Thigpen Hill.

but no funeral arrangements had been

announced at 2:30 o'clock.

The body was caught with a rope drag

a short distance from the shore. When

found, the body was in a cramped position,

and it is believed that - the victim- was

with a row boat a short distance from shore

observing that Mr. Eason had lost control

of the boat which was being blown by the

wind, Mr. Hill removed his clothes and

swam from the south bank of the lake

within the direction of the boat, but when

it became obvious that he could not reach

the boat, he turned and started back to the

shore. He swam but a few strokes on the

return when he went under supposedly

exhausted, where the water was about

seven feet deep. At this point he was about

100 yards from shore.

S. L. Davenport and sons, Essle and

Claude, Mr. Eason, and W. L. Moore all of

the Lockett Community, composed a fishing

party with Mr. Hill.

A party of about 100, mainly citizens of

Quanah, worked in efforts to find the body

last night, and a large crowd was at the lake

today, it is reported.

A.C. Hill left here yesterday afternoon

shortly after receiving the news of the

drowning. He was accompanied by a local

physician, who carried a pulmotor to the

scene of the tragedy.

C. L. Hill is survived by his wife and nine

Children. Children who survive are, sons,

Frank, 18, Guy, 14, C.L. Jr., 7, Herschell, 5,

Wayne, 18 months; daughters Lee, 17,

Velma, 16, Irene, 12, Marybelle, 10; the

victims father H. A. Hill of Sudan, also

also surviving. They are A. C. and P. D. Hill

Mrs Mattie Mayo of Odell, Mrs. Opal Rogers of Silverton and Mrs. Myrtle Jones of Chillicothe.

Hope you enjoy this information. As stated above, can you imagine the excitement and interest 100 – 150 years from now if someone finds this information. I know I would enjoy anything written about our family if I was to find it today.

Good luck, Jerry Webb
