Notes for David Fenton Clark:

The following account was written in 1979 by Rose Clark Buhn:

The David F. Clark family consisted of eight children and as far as can be ascertained dates back to the birth of our Grandpa Clark - born at Braintree, Orange County, Vermont, on September 15, 1839. Our grandmother, Mary Tyler Clark, was born at Buffalo, New York on October 2, 1851. We could learn very little about the early history of the family. Grandpa was a Civil War veteran, wounded while in the army and evidently settled in Wisconsin after they were married. Grandpa Clark came to Duel County, South Dakota in 1879, accompanied by Grandma Clark's brother, and they settled on a homestead and tree claim just southeast of Bemis, South Dakota. The family stayed in Wisconsin the first winter that Grandpa was out here, and Grandma's brother died that first winter and was buried along the highway going into Bemis and his grave marked by a small tree, which in later years was a landmark to the family. His body was later sent back to Wisconsin. Grandpa came out with an ox team and built a four room house for his family. It was a difficult and cold winter and I recall Grandpa relating the hardships they endured. The trains could not get through to Goodwin, which was the closest railroad, and one of the greatest hardships was when they ran out of baking soda, and they did not have soda to bake pancakes. The old homestead stayed in the family for many years and was the home of my parents from the time of their marriage until the death of my mother in 1936. The tree claim became the home my Uncle Lam and his family and they too lived there for many years. The homestead was sold in about 1973.

When Grandpa went back to Wisconsin to bring his family to the Dakotas, they had six children; my father and Aunt Myrtle were born in South Dakota, my father on April 2, 1881. They came out in a covered wagon. Evidently they lived in Watertown part of the time as records disclose that Grandma ran a rooming house and boarding house for railroad workers, and the older children worked at various kinds of employment. It was while they lived at Watertown that Aunt Minnie met Uncle Gene, who drove a "hack"; evidently a means of transportation in those days. They were married and moved to a farm at Aberdeen, South Dakota, where they lived for many years. The other children went their various ways, Uncle Lan settling on Grandpa's tree claim, Uncle Orris on a farm Near Stray Horse Creek, about ten miles south of Bemis, and Aunt Nettie and Charles Loerch on a farm not far from Uncle Orris and Aunt Clara. The other girls were married and settled, but I could not find a record of where they located. Aunt Chloe married a railroad man, and had two children, Louise and Russell. Their father, Frank Sage, died and in later years Aunt Chloe married Will Henry and they lived on a farm near Melfort, in Saskatchewan, Canada. Aunt Lottie married a man named Hawley and had one son, Forrest Hawley; in later years Aunt Lottie was married again to Will Davis and one daughter was born, Marie Davis, and in later years she lived at Cedar Rapids, Iowa, married to Ralph Clements. Aunt Lottie died at Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Aunt Myrtle stayed on the homestead with her parents and eventually married a man by the name of Gust Paul, and they lived at Twin Brooks, South Dakota. Eventually Aunt Myrtle went to live with Aunt Minne at Aberdeen with her son Clifford; here she met John Jones, who became her second husband, and the children of this marriage were Albert James Jones and Bernice Jones. Eventually Uncle Orris and family, and Charles Loerch and family moved to Steele, North Dakota where Uncle Orris settled on a farm and Uncle Charlie went into the machine business.

Our grandmother became ill, and went to live with Aunt Minnie at Aberdeen, where she died in about 1907, a victim of tuberculosis. Grandpa continued to live with Alva and his wife, my parents, on the family homestead and died in 1933, a victim of cancer. He spent the winters at Hot Springs in the Old Soldiers home there, and often visited at Aberdeen. When Grandpa died, he had a government pension of about $90.00 per month. He is buried in the Veterans plot at Mount Hope Cemetery in Watertown, South Dakota, not far from the graves of my parents. A government marker has been placed on his grave, and on Memorial Day we visit the grave and a flower is placed on his grave. Last year, 1978, the local paper in Watertown took pictures of the graves of veterans, and his grave and marker were published in the Watertown Public Opinion. Grandma was buried at Aberdeen and Uncle Gene and Aunt Minnie are buried in the same plot, which is on the south side of the road. In later years a new cemetery was platted on the north side of the road, and Harold Webb is buried in the new cemetery.
