(The spelling and Grammer have been corrected by this writer)

Thelmond Tenn.
December 3rd, 1863

My dear wife. I take my pen in hand to drop you a few lines to let you know how I am getting along. I am in good health at this time.
I am just out of another big battle, I got a slight wound in the back but
I can walk about. Our Regiment took the Lookout Mountain, one of the greatest passions the Rebs had. We took fifteen hundred prisoners in the
charge. Margaret I will tell you that I got shot in the back, but I was not running from them. It was a sharpshooter on my right. The ball went directly through my dress coat between the buttons and threw my shirt into my back. It took all the skin off my backbone where it struck. It knocked me down and all the boys thought I was dead but I am still alive and full of spirits of getting home to you again.
We gave the Rebs the worst whipping they had since the war broke out.
I have just received your kind letter bearing the date of November 20th.
Margaret I have faith in getting back home again for I believe the Lord is with me.

Clum is well. (His brother Columbus) Colemon D. Richardson is well too. I got two stamps in my letter. Margaret I have drawn my money again, I will send you some the first chance that I get. I have just returned from the battlefield and I am very tired and can't write much this time,
but I will write soon again, so I will come to a close for this time.
Ben Ward killed the Reb that shot me, five minutes after he shot me.
Good bye for this time and God bless you and my sweet little babies.

PS... Margaret I am going to send some Reb stamps that I got on the battlefield, that come off of Lookout Mountain. I had to look down to see the Moon rise.
