I began my research by asking older family members about our ancestors, looking at old family photos, reading entries in family bibles written by my grandparents and old family letters. Most of these letters were written between siblings Clifton & Ruth Belle Martin (Grandchildren of Benjamin & Priscilla) who were seperated on the death of their mother in 1897 but were able to reunite many years later in 1936. Ruth's daughter Vivian Melville Honadel (of Fall Creek, Wisconsin) attempted to locate and reunite the remaining siblings and their families and it is she that has inspired me to pick up the torch.
I proceeded to build upon the great foundation of material given us at a Martin Reunion in Powell County back in the late 1970's by Nora Lee Martin Walters of Powell County, Kentucky, who has been interested in genealogy for many years.
I visited local libraries and genealogy centers, and made contact with distant cousins via the internet and telephone. My sister opened up a wealth of resources for me, thank you Julie Ann! Wallace Reed & Ramah Glenn Martin of Powell County, Kentucky, as well as Stuart Manning of Cincinnati, Ohio were happy to share information and family photos with me. Thanks also goes out to Rita Fishman and Ron Hanks for sharing their information, and to my cousin (kindred spirit) Darrell Stevens for preserving and sharing family photos.
I have delved into online libraries, read numerous web sites, and scanned countless web pages looking for clues. I have read up on early Kentucky History and purchased books and CD's to glean more facts and information. I have posted on genealogy web sites, asking, requesting and sharing information. I have also written government institutions requesting further information. I HAVE GOOGLED MYSELF SILLY AND AM SERIOUSLY AFFLICTED WITH THE GENEALOGY BUG!
I plan to visit Nora Lee in the near future to share and compare our data, as well as visit the homeplace, the cemeteries, the Powell County court house & Museum. Hopefully more history can be added soon!
I also would like to get our surviving Martins together and get them talking about what all they can remember, take notes and hopefully have them identify people in other photos we have. I think it's time for another REUNION, don't you?!?
It is my wish to have this information centrally located so that all family members have access to our heritage. Hopefully we can reel in relatives we have lost touch with! I wish, hope and dream that others will come forward and share information, family photos, artifacts, stories and other interesting tidbits with the rest of us. This is another work in progress...I hope to soon add "The Ancestors of Priscilla Hanks" as well as other family branches (Spencer, Sparks, Taulbee, Tolson, Deaton, Wyatt, Hylton, Ryan...) in the near future, so check back periodically!

I'm having a little trouble sizing these pictures the way I want them. Just bear with me till I get the hang of it!

For you computer novices...to save a picture to your computer all you have to do is right click and then 'save as'.
