THE WEDAMAN'S:Information about Johannes Whitman Weedingman
Johannes Whitman Weedingman (b. Abt. 1718, d. 05 Sep 1776)
Notes for Johannes Whitman Weedingman:
** Jacob is listed as remote possibilities of children by Johanness in Pa. before SC, or even a relationship to Christopher and Christian Whitman.
This is only speculation, but is listed by others.
DUTCH FORK:
German settlement in South Carolina, which was founded about 1740, by the renowned JOHN ADAM SOMMER, (now spelled Summer,) on the "Ewadnapeena," or Broad River--at the "Forks of the Broad and Saluda,"--where the wary German settler chose his location in a country abounding in streams of clear, pure water, and small bottoms of rich meadow land, which reminded him of the region he came from in Germany.
The likely hood is that Johanes came to the area with John Summers on one of his trips from Philadelphia. Circa 1750, and he was the son of Mathias Whitman who arrived on the ship Elizabeth in 1733.Johanness was 15 in 1733 and would have been in his mid 30's when he came to the Dutch Fork area.
The Wedaman family of the Dutch Fork are thought to be the children of
Johannes Wedingman and wife, Barbara. They had a bounty grant in Amelia
Township and later lived in Dutchmans' Cr. area of Union (Chester Co.)
Dist.Hear Johannes was given the name Wedingman or Weedingman, and sometimes Widenman.
It is probable, the original name was a phonetic sounding"Vid dah man", and in my opinion, it was most likely Weidemann, Weidhmann or Weidtman in it intended original Germanic form.Being assimilated into Anglo Saxton society it is very understandable how it could be shortened to Wedman, Wedeman, Wedaman, Whitman, Wedingman or Wheattman. You could even apply the i before e rule if you like.
In 1790, the sons: Christopher(he is most likely a brother to Johanness), David, John, and Peter lived in the Cannons Cr. area of Newberry County. Christian Wedaman, found in Newberry
deed records, may also have been a son of Johannes Wedingman and wife,
Barbara but I think it more likely he was a cousin.
