Notes for Melvina* Minervia Eliza Caswell: (Letter written to Clarence from Melvie a couple Months before Marriage.) Of the Birds in thy bower now companions I make , Every simple wild flower I prize for thy sake; The deep woods and dark wilds can a pleasure impart, For their solitude suits my sad sorrow work heart. Thou art gone from my gaze, Yet I will not repine, Ore long we shall meet in the home thats now thine, For I feel thou art near, and where're I may be, That thy spirit of Love keeps a watch over me. From M.C. to C.H. Manchester, Texas Tuesday, Oct. 10, 1899 Mr. Clarence Higgins, Dear Clarence I received your ever kind and welcome letter last night was glad as ever to hearfrom you.I am well and was glad to hear you were getting over your hurt.It must of been a very bad hurt, but it might of been worse and made you a criple for life.I am getting ready to come and take care of you and see that you don't do anymore damage to yourself.I can't be contented to trust you to take care of yourself any longer. (see), so you may look for me by the first of December.I have not told the folks yet. They think we are going to wait till spring.I dread telling them, but it will half to come.So the first time anything is mentioned about us, I will tell it.I expect they will make objections, but, (a little poetry here will not be out of place will it) * (Clarence was in a mine accident & broke his back.) Though Rocks and rivers may rool between, My faithfull love and I. I'll climb the rocks and wade the streams, to Meet one glance from his dear eye. Dear Clarence the only reason I had of not coming and staying with your sister was the interest that outsiders would have in our welfare, and not because I did not want to or feel that I was not welcome and I thank dear Clara for her interest in me.Well Ma is getting supper and I guess I had better stop and help her- No, I guess not for she is calling supper is ready. She is getting smart isn't she, so I'll not be in a hurry. What ever you do to the house, our home, will be all right and I can help when I do come that is not far away.I had to go to supper to stop remarks, but did not take me long. How is your Mother and Father this fall.I hope they are doing well.Cort is at work like a nailer he has been laying floor part of the day and diging post holes the balance of the day.I think he would like it here if he had plenty of game close by to hunt . (The other page of this letter was missing.) |
